Wishes Come True by Kathleen Nance is the story
of a djinni from the world of Kaf who finds himself bound to a mortal woman
on Earth (or Terra as it is known to the Djinn)
Zoe Calderone is a single mother bringing up her
nine-year old daughter Mary while running her successful desktop publishing
business ZEVA.
What Zoe does not need is a djinni meddling in her life and granting wishes. But when she humours her daughter by participating in a summoning ceremony that is exactly what she gets.
Simon is a djinni who had been exiled from his own people by a mortal woman he had loved many years before. In order to be allowed to return he must either find his magical tablet or grant three wishes to one hundred and one masters. Zoe is the ninety-fouth person to summon him and Simon knows that his exile must surely be reaching it's end.
With a djinn in her house Zoe is at a loss what to do. She knows from experience that making wishes only leads to trouble and she resolves that she will not make any for Simon to grant. Her belief is firmly proven when she accidentally wishes for a new car and a magical monstrosity appears in her driveway. But Zoe does not take into account the fact that Simon has been exiled from his people for a long time and that now he is so close to the end of his quest he cannot be forced to fail because of Zoe's stubbornness.
When Zoe refuses to use her remaining two wishes Simon moves into her house and proceeds to use all sorts of magic to persuade and trick her into using her wishes. The longer Simon and Zoe remain together the more they grow closer together and Simon begins to realise that Zoe is different from his other masters; she does not use her wishes for selfish purposes and she holds onto the same sort of values as his own people do.
But even when they are friends Zoe still refuses to use her wishes because she believes that by using them she will be instilling the wrong values in her daughter. It is only when she discovers the truth about Simon's exile, from the djinni Darius while visiting on Kaf, that she decides to use her wishes to help release him.
Back on Earth/Terra Zoe is about to make her wishes but before she can do so her tongue gets the better of her and she makes a wish in anger that could destroy both Simon, their love and any future they might have together.
A fantastic and very original story with a sequel now available. Darius is far too charmingly arrogant to get away without a novel of his own.
