On A Wicked Wind by Linda Jones is the story of Sabrina Steele, a woman
from the twentieth century who finds herself carried on a wicked wind and
into the seventeenth century and the arms of Captain Antonio Rafael de
Zamora.
Sabrina Steele is the head of a chain of restaurants inherited from her father.
Sabrina was taught from an early age to have no fear for anything but even her father gave up on her ever overcoming her fear of water. So when arguing with her fiancé she is unprepared for the railing to break and a gust of wind carrying her out to sea and across time.
When Sabrina wakes up she is on a beach and facing the handsome pirate Rafael. Since he is one of the few people around who speaks English she finds herself being taken by the Spanish captain on his ship to a beautiful desert island.
Antonio Rafael de Zamora comes from a long line of farmers, but the sea beckoned at an early age and the grown man now finds himself the captain of the pirate ship Venganza and on a quest for revenge against a man from his past. He is unprepared for the arrival of Sabrina Steele at his feet on the moonlit beach, and he is even less prepared to be distracted from his quest by her.
But distracted he is and soon his crew are impatient to return to the sea and trouble begins on the ship.
Sabrina is enchanted by the island home of Rafael and soon finds herself falling in love with her host. But although Rafael eagerly shares his bed with her, he insists on retaining his heart and offers no promises for a future together. Not only that his fear of having those he loves taken away from him means that he will not allow himself to have a family.
When Sabrina fears that she is pregnant by Rafael she is over the moon to have some part of him with her to remind her of their time together when he has discarded her. But Rafael does not want children and as master of the island is determined that Sabrina will not bear him any.
Draw further apart by their differences Sabrina fears that her love for him is not enough and plots to keep her child no matter what, even if it means giving up the father.
Meanwhile the deadly game of revenge plays out on the seas as Rafael's old nemesis Falconer draws in on him and exacts his own form of revenge against the captain.
This is a good time travel romance with added elements of a lack of communication between the heroine and most of the people she finds herself with.
My only qualm is the speed with which the heroine overcomes her fear of the water. I too suffer from this phobia, and found the fact that the heroine overcame her fear so quickly the least believable part of this novel, including the fact that she has travelled through time. Other than that minor point I enjoyed reading this novel very much, and am sure that other time travel fanatics like myself will enjoy it too.
