Knight of a Trillion Stars

Knight of A Trillion Stars by Dara Joy  is part of the Futuristic Romance series that's slogan is "Love in Another Time, Another Place".  And for Deana Jones it is another place.

Deana is having one of those days where everything is going wrong and while her car is trapped in a parking space behind two arguing motorists who have blocked her in she goes into a nearby junk shop and purchases on impulse a necklace.

When she finally gets home her purchase is put from her mind when she discovers a strangely dressed man in her living room.  Once they have got past the language barrier Deana finds herself with an alien houseguest on the eve of her trip to a sci-fi convention.

At a loss with what to do with her alien visitor she takes him along with her, humouring him at his insistence that he is from another world by pretending that the planet is called Disney World.

Later at the convention Deana recalls her junk store purchase and after polishing it decides to wear it at the convention.

Lorgin ta'al Krue, Knight of the Charl does not know why he was called through the tunnels to Earth (or Disney World as he believes it is called) but he is sure that his mission is connected to the woman whose house is in.  Following her to her convention he barely leaves her side until he sees her wearing the Shimalee (necklace) and following his destiny he starts the ceremony of marriage which Deana unwittingly completes.

Lorgin then takes Deana (or Adeeann as he calls her) to Ryka Twelve where she meets host of characters and the fun really begins.

Yaniff, Lorgin's mentor, is an elderly mystic who reminded me a great deal of Merlin, though whether this was intentional or not I do not know.  Whichever, it made for a very interesting character.

It is Yaniff that brings news of Lorgin's mission, that there are disturbances he must deal with on the rim.  And this mission takes him across the universe, with Deana in tow, to his childhood friend Traed, a man whose father could be the most dangerous enemy they have ever faced.

But it is not all seriousness and the fun comes in the form of  the Familiar, Rejar who is Lorgin's half brother and has the ability to turn himself into a cat and back to the form of a man at will.  Something Deana does not discover until later, which causes a lot of humour as Lorgin becomes more and more agitated with her constantly petting the cat.

There is also plenty of opportunities for humour with Rejar's ability to communicate with his mind (because he is lazy - according to Lorgin).  He and Lorgin certainly make the most of this talent as they torment Deana with the horrors of their home planet which will soon be hers.

But despite the fact that she is married to Lorgin Deana feels that he has made a mistake in marrying her, for the only reason was the Shimalee which she had just bought on the day of his arrival.  Can she trust herself to believe that she is the special person that the Shimilee was meant to draw Lorgin to?

A wonderful story that takes place on several planets and brings forth plenty of characters, some that are to feature in coming novels.  I for one look forward to reading Traed's story; Rejar's is readily available.
