Night
of the Dragon by Peggy Webb is shorter than most of the books I read and is part of
the Loveswept series. It is the first of this series I have read
and I am sorry to say that it did leave me rather disappointed.
Lydia Star had just broken up with her partner and had retreated out
of the State she lived in and opened a little book store with the help
of her "Uncle Michael".
After returning from a run Lydia settled down with a book of legends about Camelot. Intrigued by the story of Lancelot and Guinevere and jealous of the passion they had shared Lydia twisted an old ring found in the spine of the book and found herself transported through time to the land of Dragon, a Knight of the Round Table and her soul mate.
Dragon did not know where the woman on his lands had come from but his loyalty to his king demanded that he discover the truth and despite what his heart told him if she was a witch the penalty was death by burning.
I thought that this book was a wonderful idea but was disappointed at a lack of plot and little depth of the characters.
With the legendary Camelot as the setting there was so much this book could have done, and so little that it actually did. But because this is "Loveswept" I can understand that the loyal readers of this series are looking for novels that focus almost totally on the relationship between the central characters. However for me this is not enough. I enjoy intriguing plots and letting the lesser characters interact more within the story. I thought that with the arrest things would pick up but this was not to be and the witch trial was over almost as soon as it had begun.
I also felt that the background of Dragon could have been looked at in more detail. While one paragraph did hint at what had happened to his family there was little else. Lydia's mother was treated in much the same way - we learn that she has retreated into her home like a recluse but little more is known.
The ending also seemed a little too easy - there was no explanation to Dragon's appearance.
I am sorry to give any novel a bad review as I am sure that there are many people out there who enjoy the "Loveswept" series and will take great pleasure from this book. For me I am afraid that I was constantly waiting for a plot to deepen and for answers to questions that maybe only I was asking.
