Time-Kept Promises by Constance O'Day Flannery is the story of Kristine
Gavin, a successful television presenter who takes a trip through time
to the house of one of her ancestors.
For her birthday her brother had found an old family portrait of a woman bearing an uncanny resemblance to Kristine. Searching for a name on the back of the picture Kristine finds a news-cutting of a story of Sean O'Mara, a man who had been charged with the murder of his wife, Christina O'Mara.
Before Kristine can look any further into the mystery she finds herself in the house of Sean O'Mara and mistaken for his wife.
No one believes that she is not Christina but they cannot deny that the helpful, friendly young woman is a complete improvement on the hated mistress of the household.
Pretty soon is seems that Kristine is trapped in the year 1871 and there is no sign of Christina who is still missing.
Sean O'Mara married for the property that his wife Christina would bring to the marriage. He never realised the trouble he would be getting with her, or that she would flaunt her lovers under his nose. After their latest row Sean left the house to ride off his fury on one of his beloved horses never imagining that Christina would stage a disappearing act to have him suspected of her murder.
Now Christina is back he intends to go against all his beliefs and divorce his unfaithful wife, no matter who she says she is.
But soon the real Christina comes to realise that her plans are not going as they should because of the impostor in her place and she returns to her home to confront her husband and Kristine.
Kristine does not know why or how, but when Christina arrives she knows that something is dreadfully wrong and that they should never have met and that time is about to play another trick on them by sending both her and Sean into the future.
After seeing that Kristine is not his wife Sean no longer treats her with the contempt he had shown her in the past and they set out to make a life together in the future. But things are not over yet as Christina sets out to exact her revenge on the couple by any means that she can.
Can Sean and Kristine have a life together in any time or will Christina succeed in her plans to ruin the lives of those who have defied her?
A wonderful story with multiple time travellers and great plot twists. I think I did prefer the second half of the novel when the couple arrived in the future, but it was a tough choice as the wonderful plot needed both of the settings to work.
A great book and one which is to be re-printed later this year.
