Here and Then

Here and Then by Linda Lael Miller
Here and Then by Linda Lael Miller is the sequel to There and Now and while it does not continue the story of Elisabeth and Jonathan it does let us know how they are getting on through the eyes of Rue Claridge.

Rue was mentioned several times in the prequel to this novel but we do not meet her until now when she returns from one of her extended trips.

On her return she finds that her cousin Elisabeth is missing and the only clues to her disappearance are the letters written to her telling the absurd tale of doorways into the past and magic necklaces that carry the wearer to another time.

Not quite believing the letters but curious nonetheless Rue remains at the house where she soon finds herself becoming closer to the past, as the sounds of music drift through time to her ears in much the same way as Elisabeth's experience.

Sure enough it is not long before Rue herself is in the past contemplating whether she is having a complete nervous breakdown or just popping into her cousin's hallucination for a while.

Knowing that the best thing to do would be to find Elisabeth she sets out in search of her and Jonathan.  But Rue has arrived a little too late and the happy couple are away on an extended honeymoon. leaving her to fend for herself in 1892.

Headstrong and independent she soon finds herself on the wrong side of the law and spending a night behind bars in the company of Marshal Farley Haynes.

Knowing her only way home is through the doorway while wearing the necklace Rue is distraught to find that she has somehow lost the chain and worse still, when she finds it the powers of the stone seem to be changing.

No longer does she need to walk through the doorway to travel through time, merely holding the necklace has the same effect.

But Rue is determined to stay in the past until Elisabeth has returned so she can assure herself that she is all right.  And in the meantime there are other distractions, such as Farley.

But Rue knows that she could never make a life for herself in the past and tearfully resolves to return to the 20th century and leave Elisabeth in 1892.

But can she leave Farley too?

This is a decision that she must make and soon because the necklace seems to have a mind of it's own and Rue finds herself no longer in control of her destiny or her heart.

A wonderful book that makes me wish for a third in this series.
