You’re The One by Judi McCoy is a ghost story
with a difference.
The curse of Cassandra Kinross.
“Come fire and water and air and earth, and curse
this man who’d see me hurt. My trust he took, my life he stole, ‘tis
only just he pay a toll. For the price of his folly he shall walk
alone, his male kin for his sins atone. No love shall they find in
this mortal world, until I find my true love first. Then must we
both with all our hearts, proclaim our love to break the curse.”
In modern day New Jersey the latest of the men
to fall victim to her curse is Rand MacPherson. The president of
his own construction company he is successful in everything but love.
Rand has just inherited the house he has wanted to own all his life. A Victorian mansion in a sorry state of repair, Rand cares nothing for the fact it is run down and will cost a fortune to renovate. He has wanted this house all his life and intends to make it his home.
What Rand doesn’t know is that the house comes with its very own ghost.
Cassandra has haunted Rand’s house for one hundred years, ever since the day she was murdered there by Rand’s Great-Uncle. The house had remained in a trust until now and she had not been disturbed by mortals intruding on her solitude. But now the trust had run its course and she was about to be disturbed, in more ways than one, by Rand MacPherson.
It does not take long for Rand to realise that his house is haunted but it will be longer before he finds out just who the spirit is and why it wants him to leave. He has no idea that the spirit is that of his Great-Uncle’s murdered bride who his Great-Uncle had always claimed ran away back to Scotland of their wedding day.
Cassandra is not only a ghost but also has a few spells up her sleeves and she will use every trick in the book to drive Rand from her door.
There follows an amusing battle of wills between the ghostly Cassandra and the earthbound Rand.
Against this in the background there is the assortment of family members of Rand who suddenly descend on them, from his interfering mother and sister to his friend Duke. They provide more amusement and an alternative perspective on Cassandra’s dilemma.
With plenty of twists in the story the reader is kept hanging on to the last possible minute. Events happen that would indicate the end of the curse but things are never entirely what they seem when the supernatural is involved in the mix.
Fast-paced, amusing and at times very sentimental
the love story of Cassandra and Rand is one that will remain in the reader’s
memory for some time to come. Judi McCoy has delivered a winner with
a new take on the classic ghostly romance.
