Your Wish is My Command by Donna Kauffman is the story of a cursed privateer named Sebastien Valentin who is destined to spend eternity uniting soul mates. He is summoned by anyone who unsheathes the Sword of Hearts and his latest mistress is Jamie Sullivan, former powerboat racer who is now running a bookshop/café with her two closest friends Marta and Ree Ann.
Struggling to get ready for the grand opening the usual problems of running a new business plague the trio and the latest problem is the air-conditioning.
Whilst rummaging in the attic for an extension cord Jamie comes across the sword and accidentally summons Sebastien forth. Unconvinced by his pirate act she is sure that it is a practical joke, if only she could figure out how he appeared and disappeared so quickly.
Sebastien is determined to prove that he has the power to unite soul mates and promises Jamie that he will find the soul mates of her two friends first of all and then finally unite her with her own soul mate. But in the time they spend together he finds himself falling for Jamie until he cannot bear to match-make her with anyone but himself. But the choice has been made, and even though Jamie did not ask for either her friends or herself to be matched, Sebastien has set the wheels in motion.
Sebastien was cursed to be punished for his rakish life by Oriane, a voodoo priestess, and does not know how the curse can be broken, or even if it can be. He cannot see any way for things to be altered and he freed from the task of eternal match-making so that he can finally be with Jamie and the love that he has finally found.
Jamie is sure that Sebastien is not a match-making pirate from a bygone age. Just as she is sure that he could never manage to set up her two closest friends with their soul mates. But slowly she finds that she is beginning to believe the impossible. Especially when he succeeds in setting up Ree with her soul mate, who also happens to be a man who dislikes her as much as she does him. Only a truly magical being could manage to pull of such a feat.
And as Jamie slowly comes around to believing Sebastien’s story she sets about researching into his past to discover if he really did exist two centuries before. But her best source of information is Sebastien himself when he opens up to her the story of his past, the curse and his eternal quest that will keep him from her forever.
This magical novel has a delightful cast of characters and a penultimate chapter twist that threatens to tear apart Jamie and Sebastien forever.
A delightful twist to the usual djinni tales that
will enchant readers and urge a clearing out of attics in the hope of finding
another Sword of Hearts.
