Waltz in Time
Waltz in Time by Eugenia Riley is the story of Stephanie Sergeant,
a young widow who inherits a mansion in Natchez and finds to her surprise
that, unlike when she has stayed there before, it is now haunted by spirits
from the past.
The haunting music from a badly played violin echoes through the house, as does the cry of a baby and the sounds of children playing.
The most distressing ghost of all though is that of Stephanie's aunt, the previous owner of the house.
Appearing to her in the hours of the night she confides in Stephanie that she cannot pass off from the earth until the other spirits of the house are laid to rest.
The longer Stephanie stays in the house the less sleep she is able to get as her nights are constantly disturbed, first by the sounds from the past and then by the ghosts themselves - a sad woman asking for help in making another love her, and her aunt begging her to help her find peace.
As Stephanie battles to find her own degree of peace she finds her days too are haunted as the past and present combine and a small child asking Stephanie to come and marry his father so he can have her for a mother.
Unable to ignore their cries for help Stephanie drinks a glass of wine and upon waking finds herself in the year 1878 and meeting her ghosts in the flesh.
Taken
into the home of the Goddard's Stephanie finds herself helping Miss Ebbie
(the ghost asking for help and the violin player) in her attempts to control
the five unruly children of the handsome Andre Goddard.
From the moment she arrives Stephanie is certain that Miss Ebbie is in love with Andre, her deceased sister's widowed husband. And so she sets about trying to set up Andre and Ebbie. With makeovers and tips on bringing the children under control Stephanie finds her task is seriously impaired when it becomes obvious that the prospective groom is more interested in the matchmaker than his shy sister-in-law.
Unable to resist her charming employer and his adorable children Stephanie finds herself plotting, not to set up Ebbie with Andre, but to find another suitor for her before her heart is broken, history repeats itself, and her ghost once more haunts the mansion.
To secure her own happiness Stephanie must uncover the numerous secrets of the household and set matters on the course for true love and happiness for the whole family. And to do that she must also let go of her own past and risk hoping for a future in the past.
