And the Groom Wore Tulle by Lynn Kurland is the short story that sees Ian MacLeod fulfil his promise in A Dance Through Time and turn up on Jamie's doorstep in the future.

When Jamie left his cousin Ian in the past they understood that someone could only leave their own time and go to the future if they were at the end of their life and would not be missed in the course of history.  I suspect, considering the amount of century hopping that takes place later that Jamie's belief in this regard may have changed somewhat.  However Ian certainly believes that he cannot leave until he is at death and whilst imprisoned in the dungeon of the Fergussons he knows that death is near, but unfortunately the time gate in the forest is not.

Believing him to be dead, or at least near enough to not make a difference, the Fergussons release him and dump him, unconscious, in the forest near the MacLeod castle.  Thankfully for Ian they manage to throw him down right on a time gate and his dreams about visiting Jamie in the future help him to travel through time himself.  Unfortunately he doesn't wind up exactly where he hoped to one day be.  Instead of Scotland 1996, Ian finds himself in New York 1999, in the workshop filled with bridal gowns.  Considering that he didn't realise he had been taken out of the dungeon it isn't too surprising that Ian thinks he might actually have died in there.  The place he has found himself doesn't seem to be either Heaven or Hell but rather a limbo with clothing for angels in it.  Since he knows where it is that he wants to end up he doesn't see a problem with borrowing one of the angelic dresses for his own use...in the hopes that he can sneak into Heaven that way.

Jane Fergusson is a designer who makes a living by making bridal gowns and letting others take the credit for her hard work.  It isn't even the type of work that she wants to do but like all modern women she needs to pay the rent somehow.

Left on her own to work over a long weekend she figures it is just her luck when she stumbles across Ian MacLeod in her workshop.  A Scottish man who appears to be a complete nutcase and has delusions of time travel.  As a girl who has read more than her fair share of time travel romances Jane is not prepared to believe this at the outset but when she takes Ian home with her to help him find Jamie she finds herself starting to accept that what he is telling her is true.

Another lovely little story, though I would have preferred Ian (one of my favourite characters from A Dance Through Time to have had a full novel of his own.  Thankfully Ian and the rest of the MacLeod bunch pop up fairly frequently in other books so it is not entirely as though this is all there is for the charming womanizer.
