Virginia Farmer

Virginia Farmer is the author of several time travel romances reviewed on this site including the new release A Blast to the Past.

It is a pleasure to welcome her to the Magical Romance Website for an interview about her novels and other pastimes.

LB First of all could you please tell us a little about yourself as an introduction to the visitors to the Magical Romance Website.

VF    I began my storytelling career at an early age.  I tried to convince my kindergarten classmates that I, a fair-skinned, redhead, was an Indian princess!  Undaunted by this initial failure, I continued to spin tales of damsels in distress, saved by knights in shining armor.  So it wasn't surprising to anyone, (except me), that I would write a romance novel.  No matter what I'm doing, I'm always laying different scenes for a story in my mind.  Makes things like scrubbing the floors, vacuuming the carpets or weeding the garden less of a chore!

LB    A Blast to the Past is out in the stores this month.  Can you tell us what this book is about please?

VF    A freak explosion sends US Navy bomb technician, Brian Skelley back in time to fourteenth-century Scotland and into the arms of Caira Mackenzie.  But when he learns her secret, will he continue his efforts to return to his time--or remain with Caira and a love that transcends the centuries?

LB    There was quite a lengthy period of time between the release of Sixpence Bride and Spenceworth Bride.  Did you initially plan to write both books or did the intention to write the second one come about later?

VF    Actually, I didn't think anyone would be interested in Nelwina's story!  I underestimated my readers!

LB    Well this reader for one is very glad to see Nelwina's story too.

LB    You attended the November RT Conference.  Are you planning on attending the conference this year?  What was your most memorable experience from the conference in November?

VF    I hope to attend the 2005 RT conference.  As for the conference last October, it was so much fun.  I met so many wonderful readers and booksellers.  My most memorable experience.  Hmm, there were so many, but I think the Hospitality Suite was the most fun, meeting readers, booksellers and those cover models!  Oh my!

LB    All your books so far are time travel romances.  Do you have any plans to branch out into other paranormal genres or are you intending to stick with the time travels?

VF    I have an idea for a ghost story, another idea for a story with a bit of magic in it, but my true passion is time travel.  I love blending modern day with the past.  I love history, especially English and Scottish.

LB    What do you find to be the most challenging thing about writing a time travel romance?

VF    Getting the character settled in the new time.  Understanding the language is always a problem and trying to find a way around it is difficult.

LB    What do you like to read for inspiration?  Who are the authors that you rush out to buy the books of?

VF    For inspiration I love to read historical nonfiction.  Most of the stories banging around in my head have started with a piece of historical trivia.  I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Teresa  Mediros and Sandra Hill.

LB    You have made several period clothing items which are shown on your site.  Very impressive work.  Are you involved in any re-enactment groups where your work can be displayed?  Or is it something that you have considered doing?

VF    No, I'm not involved in a re-enactment group, though I did meet a group of Civil War re-enactors and my respect for them and what they do is immeasurable.  I was amazed.  Not only did the people have to wear period correct clothing, but their behavior had to reflect the period.  And they had to cook over a camp fire!  Unfortunately, there just isn't enough time in the day.  I have entertained the idea of  designing and sewing costumes for local theater groups, but between my writing, sewing and remodeling our house, my time is pretty much spent.

LB    What else do you like to do in your spare time when you are not writing and sewing costumes?

VF    For the last two and a half years my husband and I have traveled around the US in an RV.  Recently, we set down roots again and bought a home--a home stuck in the 70's!  It's a lovely house with wonderful flow, but in dire need of updating.  So painting, tiling and stitching window treatments keeps me pretty busy, along with my writing and promoting A Blast To The Past.

LB   And finally, do you have a message for all your readers out there.

VF    I write for the joy it brings me and those who read my stories.  My goal is to give my readers an escape from the daily grind and bring a bit of humor into their day.  I love to hear from my readers--each and every one of you is important.

And if any readers want to contact Ms Farmer details can be found at her website.  The link is just down the page.

Thanks to Virginia Farmer for taking the time to do this interview.  I hope to see more time travel romances from you in the future and those others sound rather interesting too.  Ghostly romances have been rather sparse in the last few years.
