There and Now

There and Now by Linda Lael MillerThere and Now by Linda Lael Miller is the first book set in the town of Pine River in both 1992 and 1892.

This novel is about the newly divorced Elisabeth McCartney who seeks refuge in the home she was raised in by her Aunt Verity, with her cousin Rue.

Even as she arrives at the house she recalls her aunt's stories of time travellers stepping from one century to another through a boarded up doorway.  These tales are only out told by those of the handsome doctor who has haunted the house with his young daughter since the night they were tragically killed in a fire.  The same fire that ruined an entire section of the house and resulted in the doorway through the dimensions being boarded up.

So when Elisabeth, wearing a special necklace, follows the sound of music through the doorway she comes face to face with her living ghosts.  For Jonathan and his daughter Trista are alive and well in 1892 and so is she.

Although Elisabeth can and does travel back and forth through the doorway she is to a certain extent trapped in one century or the other at various times.  Firstly when Jonathan takes her necklace, and later when she is somehow unable to return to the past.

The only fault I could find with this book is that Jonathan is too sceptical about her time travel.  While I understand that most people would be slow to believe such a story, I do find it hard to believe that faced with objects from the future, and travelling to the future himself does not convince him that Elisabeth just might be telling the truth.  This is a minor point however in the whole story which takes a dramatic turn when she realises that the arsonist accused of murdering the doctor and his daughter is none other than herself.  Now there are three lives at stake, including her own, there is no turning back.

Beautifully written and set up nicely for the sequel.
