The Police & other Authorities
Text in this colour denotes that it is a spoiler for Incubus Dreams
Ki was one of the police officers on the zombie hunt in The Laughing Corpse.
Roberts was a female officer on the zombie hunt in The Laughing Corpse.
Brady is the officer asked to escort Anita away from the crime scene in The Laughing Corpse when they do not know who she is.
Rob is one of the officers on the Spook Squad and is a regular officer who crops up from time to time throughout the series.
McAdam is a diver with the police.
Detective Padgett is a psychic who "freaks out" around the monsters. The aura of power makes his flesh crawl. Unfortunately he does not know that he is psychic and does not accept it when Anita tells him.
Rudolph "Dolph" or "Dolf" Storr
Lt Rudolph Storr is the head of the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team. His relationship with Anita at the beginning of the series is very good but unfortunately begins to deteriorate when he finds out that she is dating Jean-Claude.
He is married to Lucille and they have two sons. One is married to a human and they cannot have children. The other is dating a vampire and intends to become one himself. He cannot accept this and his relationship with Anita hits breaking point in Cerulean Sins when his prejudices against the monsters start to affect his work. In particular when he pulls in Jason for investigation and states that he should be locked up just because he is a werewolf. He is forced to take leave from work and we must wait and see just what happens when he returns to RPIT in the next book.
In Incubus Dreams but we learn that he and Anita are starting to smooth things over a little, with Anita having persuaded Dolph's son, Darrin, to put off becoming a vampire although he is still planning on marriage to his vampire girlfriend.
But the personal problems are far from over and he still seems to bait Anita about her relationship with Jean-Claude.
Zerbrowski is a regular character and an officer with RPIT. He is married to Katie and there are frequent jokes about his appearance and why she lets him out of the house dressed like he does.
He likes to windup Anita and is particularly fond of referring to Jean-Claude as Count Dracula. He was also responsible for the penguin jokes at Anita's expense.
However he is also a good friend to Anita and is fair when dealing with the "monsters". He does not appear to be prejudiced against them, or at least not to the extent that it affects his work.
In Incubus Dreams Zerbrowski is the officer as the second crime scene and he keeps Sheriff Christopher out of things when he arrives to find that the men are using holy items on the vampires, something that has been classed as assault in the federal court.
Sheriff Titus is an animal hunter who illegally hunts shapeshifters. He is shot by Edward.
This Deputy is jumpy and trigger happy. He actually pulls a gun on Anita and Clive Perry at a crime scene. Like Sheriff Titus he also hunts shapeshifters illegally. He is stabbed by Anita.
Patterson is one of the Deputies who works under Sheriff Titus.
These two officers work for the County Sheriff's department. It was Holmes who called in the Spook Squad in The Lunatic Café. They answer to Police Chief Garroway. Holmes was shot dead.
Garroway is the officer in charge of Holmes and Lind who "babysit" the crime scene until the Spook Squad arrives.
Murdock is the officer who was stationed at the hospital after the attack on Stephen and Nathaniel's ward in Burnt Offerings.
This officer is protecting the Naga at the hospital in The Lunatic Café.
Perry is one of the newest recruits to RPIT in Guilty Pleasures. Anita is curious to know what it was that he did to get transferred to the Spook Squad. Whatever it was he is still on the team in the latest book in the series and backs up Anita when Dolph starts to crack under the strain of his personal problems with the monsters.
Sgt Freemont is with the Missouri State Force and she is in charge of the murder investigation in Bloody Bones.
She is very territorial of her investigation and goes so far as to blackball Anita with the FBI.
Sheriff David St John is the Sheriff of Monkey's Eyebrow, Missouri. He is convinced that the attack on Ellie Quinlan was by a stranger not someone she knew.
Detective Branswell interviews Anita in connection with the death of the hitman at her apartment. He knows Gross and Brady, the first officers on the scene at the killer zombie attack at her apartment. He suggests that she may want to move jurisdiction.
Deputy Coltrain works with Sheriff St John and expresses the opinion that he does not think Anita's help is needed in their case.
Rather poor judgement since he is later killed on the vampire hunt.
This officer is with Sheriff St John on the vampire hunt. He was attacked in the hunt and controlled by the vampires. He tries to attack Larry and is shot by Anita.
This officer is with Sheriff St John on the vampire hunt. He gets into a fight with Anita and Larry right away. His previous partner in the Force was killed in a vampire attack which left himself scarred.
An FBI agent brought in on the Quinlan case. Bradford boots Anita off of the case after talking with Freemont.
However their paths cross again and Bradley turns out to be very helpful to Anita in future cases and she returns the favour. He in fact becomes her favourite FBI agent. He works in the Special Research Section which was set up to handle preternatural crime. The Department is struggling to remain in existence and not be disbanded.
Agent Elwood of the FBI was brought in with Agent Bradford to investigate the Quinlan case.
This detective works with Officer Rizzo and questions Anita regarding the death of the second assassin.
Tammy Reynolds is the first Detective on the Spook Squad with preternatural abilities. Unlike other officers who are assigned to the squad for various transgressions she is there by choice.
She works on the murder enquiry of Robert and adds to the squad her abilities as a witch. She is also able to read auras. She is a member of the Followers of the Way who are Christian witches.
She is fascinated by Anita's profession and tries rather to hard to be her friend. Unfortunately Anita feels like a freak around Tammy.
Tammy is dating, and planning to marry Larry Kirkland and is expecting their first child. When she confides in Anita about her pregnancy she also thinks that Anita is expecting. When Anita denies this Tammy is hurt that Anita does not confide in her and does not believe that she is not pregnant. I would hope that this rift is healed when it becomes obvious that Anita is not expecting.
Tammy is now married to Larry following the Halloween wedding at the start of Incubus Dreams. She chose orange as the colour for the bridesmaids.
Captain McKinnon is a firefighter and arson investigator. He used to play football with Dolph when they were in college.
He wants help with the firebug case and is recommended to Anita for help.
This officer was a guard inside Stephen and Nathaniel's ward after the shooting.
We meet Officer Smith again in Incubus Dreams where he is now the newest detective on the RPIT. Anita had noticed how comfortable he was with the lycanthropes and mentioned it to Dolph. Seeing him on the team makes Anita believe that perhaps despite all their problems Dolph does still value her opinion.
When Anita is binding Truth to her she remembers that he is a little bit psychic and can sense the energy of shapeshifters.
He is not comfortable with how Anita executes Jonah Cooper.
Fulton is the Incident Commander at the building where new vampires are trapped in the basement. The building is a Church of Eternal Life halfway house for new vampires.
He is annoyed with Anita when she corrects him to Ms instead of Miss.
He lost his wife and daughter to vampires.
Tucker is a female fireperson without much of a sense of humour. She was killed by the vampires in the safe house.
Wren is a fireman with too much humour.
Officer Maiden is tough, well-read and good at his job. Unfortunately he had also branded Richard guilty right for the start.
He carries too much firepower and says that it is to balance him out when he runs.
He becomes one of the bad guys when, together with Wilkes and Thompson, they attack Anita at Richard's cabin.
However he is later revealed to be an undercover agent for the FBI who was out to get Niley.
He also saves Daniel.
The Sheriff will turn a blind eye to the locals attacking Anita, Jason and Shang-Da. He is in the pay of Niley.
He also checks out Anita's past and body count. He attacks Anita and Richard with his officers at the cabin and threaten them into leaving town.
He is shot dead by Anita.
Thompson is one of Wilkes officers. He has a scarred face and is described as rough and dangerous and a "goon with a badge".
He is scared of Niley and would prefer to goad Anita into killing him.
Anita chops off one of his fingers when she finds out that he has raped Charlotte Zeeman. He gives up and lets Anita know the hiding place. Anita then shoots him dead.
Henderson is a State Trooper in charge of a murder site. He is sour at the outset but is amused by Anita.
He questions if Anita called the demon.
Michaels is a State Trooper at the murder site. He lets Anita into the crime scene when he does not know her.
Marks is the man dealing with the case of the people who have been skinned but are kept alive through magic.
He is prejudiced against animators and immediately gets Anita kicked off of the case.
He is not very popular with the other officers.
He has no problem with lying to Anita to make himself look tougher than he actually is.
Norton is on the case in New Mexico. He gives Anita the tour of the victim's house.
He is an older officer but bitter about being a low ranking cop.
Appleton is in charge of the New Mexico case.
Ramirez, who insists that Anita call him Hernando is on the case in New Mexico.
He is a young officer and a bit of a charmer who tries to win Anita over. She does not want to date him because she knows that as one of the "girlfriends" she her opinion on the case will not be taken as seriously.
However when he has seen what she is capable of he is shocked, something which Anita does regret.
These are two officers who helped to get Anita kicked off of the case in New Mexico. Anita likes to bait them. Unlike Marks though they do have a sense of humour and tease back. They also fill Anita in one what Marks has been saying about her.
This Agent is from the FBI and working on the case in New Mexico.
Rigby is Ramirez's backup in New Mexico. Polite and as Anita puts it "lacking in the air that most police officers have.
Nicols is one of the officers at the raising of Gordon Bennington. He is the one who identifies Rex and Balfour from the photos and helps make the connections. Anita had recognised the two men but could not place them. Nicols did.
Judge Fletcher is the judge overseeing the raising of Gordon Bennington.
Officer Jenkins is the first officer at the crime scene that Anita attends with Jason in Cerulean Sins. He is an officer who does not want to let her into the scene and it is only with persuading and her Federal Marshall status that she finally gets past him.
As soon as Anita made it past Officer Jenkins, Officer Kennedy was on the scene. This officer had a smart mouth and found his match in Anita before Zerbrowski arrived to sort things out.
Detective O'Brien is a female officer who sees the murder case is Cerulean Sins as a step up for her and she sees herself as taking all the glory in the press and making a career for herself.
She is eager to keep Anita out of the case and withholds information from her so that Anita does not know what it is that she has found herself involved in. She fears that Anita will be grabbing headlines from her and she does not want this.
It is only with great reluctance and under pressure from Anita that she lets her know what she has found out.
This detective made the mistake of coming over to Detective O'Brien's desk and speaking to Anita about the case. He literally gives away the fact that they have a big case and ruins O'Brien's plan to keep Anita out of the picture.
Bad career move.
This officer is one who seems to be popping up now and again and appears to have taken a fancy to Nathaniel. Anita seems to be pondering on a little matchmaking for them. We'll have to wait and see.
In Incubus Dreams Jessica makes it very clear that she is interested in Nathaniel who is just as clearly not interested in her. Unfortunately Jessica takes the situation very badly and she and Anita find themselves in an awkward situation where their personal lives are very much interfering with their police work. Hopefully Jessica will soon find herself a man and she and Anita can resolve things. A bit of a shame as although I liked the direction taken with Nathaniel in this book I would have liked to see him with Jessica just as much. Though in light of her reaction after seeing Anita and Nathaniel on the stage of Guilty Pleasures it is doubtful any relationship between the two of them would have lasted for long.
This officer had been with the Squad that had attempted to capture Van Anders. Unlike the rest of them who survived he had not been taken to the hospital. He had waited to ask how a werewolf could partially change.
By the time Anita arrives on the scene he is in shock.
Parker is in charge of the failed capture of Van Anders. We only see him briefly, yelling at Zerbrowski and Anita for what had gone wrong. Anita takes it because she senses his fear.
Parker re-appears in Incubus Dreams when Anita calls in the Mobile Reserve of which he is in charge to help capture the vampire killers.
Officer Wayne has a brief appearance in Burnt Offerings where he announces that Stephen has visitors claiming to be family and that if they are he will eat his gun. As they are pack Anita suggests he pucker up as they are considered family.
Deputy Douglas is an officer at the second crime scene of Incubus Dreams. He mistakes Anita for one of the strippers at the club where the vampire suspects are being held. He walks Anita through the club as he doesn't know whether to believe she is a federal marshal or not.
When Anita and Sheriff Christopher come up against each other again at Incubus Dreams it is Douglas who separates them.
Sheriff Melvin Christopher is the sheriff in charge at the second crime scene (at least under Zerbrowski) and like Officer Douglas he mistakes Anita for a stripper. Not surprisingly he and Anita do not get along at all. He tries to stop her going through the doors to where Zerbrowski is waiting for her and she actually has to call him to get past the Sheriff's men. He uses, and encourages his men to use, crosses on the vampire suspects.
They come to blows again at Incubus Dreams when he does not believe that Anita has just come across the body of the latest victim.
Anita silently calls him an "equal opportunity bigot".
Abrahams is with Jessica Arnet at one of the crime scenes and is the one who helps her get into the apartment.
An officer at one of the crime scenes who is sent by Arnet to warn Zerbrowski that the press has arrived. He is one of the officers who accompanies Anita and Zerbrowski to Malcolm's church.
An officer who attends at the Church of Eternal Life with Anita, Zerbrowski and others. Officer Smith calls him a "wussy" when he doesn't want to get close to a vampire and pat him down. He also thinks that Anita is being attacked when she is tying Truth to her and Jean-Claude with the blood oath.
Unfortunately this Deputy is not any better than the previous one of the same name. If it were not for the fact that Anita does not recognise him I would say that they were likely the same person. This Deputy is questioning Micah at the scene in Incubus Dreams at the club of that name. He is convinced that Micah is a stripper and or interesting in men. Anita tells him if he can't ask a single question that could help solve the crime then to go somewhere else. Unfortunately the officer is not bright enough to take the advice. When he sees Micah's kitty cat eyes he actually jumps back.
One of the two Sergeants (together with Hudson) who is responsible for overseeing and organising the rescue of Dawn Morgan.
He is killed when they go into the condo and are attacked by the vampires who lie in wait for them.
One of the two Sergeants (together with Melbourne) who is responsible for overseeing and organising the rescue of Dawn Morgan.
It is Hudson who gets into a verbal argument with Anita before they move into the condo. He does not like her attitude and makes no pretence at putting up with it telling her to go home if she won't co-operate with the plan. They work out their differences enough for Anita to remain on the team when they go in.
An officer with the Mobile Reserve, he is the nearest in size to Anita and she borrows his kit when going into the condo. He moves away from Anita when Hudson turns his attention to her.
Like Killian Jung is an officer who moves away from Anita when she argues with Hudson. Anita notes that he is the only green-eyed Asian American she has ever met.
He is attacked by the female vampires but survives as the jugular was missed.
Part of the Mobile Reserve team who helps Anita get set up with her weapons. He and Mendez find the first victim. Derry is disappointed to have to stay in the kitchen whilst Anita checks out the body.
One of the officers in the Mobile Reserve team and the one carrying the shied due to the fact that he was the tallest on the team.
An office in the Mobile Reserve who together with Derry checks out the kitchen where they find the first victim in the condo. He hesitates to kill one of the vampires who begs for her life and questions who the good guys are when Anita executes her.
