Sunrise on the Mediterranean by Suzanne Frank is the third volume in the
continuing saga of the time travelling husband and wife Chloe and Cheftu.
When Chloe wakes this time into her latest adventure she is finally back in her own body. Better still, only her own thoughts are in her mind. Cheftu is nowhere in sight and she knows she is not in the 20th century again. Once again they are parted and she must make her way back to him.
Chloe finds herself in the Mediterranean, literally, and is mistaken for a mermaid and pulled from the water by the local seafarers.
Believing her to be a goddess she is taken to a temple where she muddles her way through things, for the first time in her time travels without the help of the past memories of another person. A disadvantage of being back in her own body, as Chloe soon realises.
Having made a brief stop in modern times Chloe has now discovered what RaEm has been doing to her life in the two years she has been gone. But her love for Cheftu would not let her remain in the 20th century and she travelled through time once more to be with him.
Cheftu you may recall was left with RaEm at the end of Shadows on the Aegean. RaEm was now in the body recently vacated by Chloe. By now Cheftu’s patience was wearing very thin as he was trapped on an island with a woman he cannot abide, while his wife could be anywhere in the world or anywhere in time.
After a week of torture Cheftu and RaEm are rescued from their island and taken back to Egypt once more. But this time they find that the land they are in is not the glorious Egypt that they once knew. Instead the Pharaoh is ruining the land and the scent of rebellion against the madman is rising each day.
Using the stones as soon as he is able to hide away from RaEm Cheftu finds out that Chloe is in the same time as him. Now he just has to find out where she is.
RaEm soon finds that she has a new mission in life. And this is to rule Egypt with the Pharaoh Aten. Or better still, without him. After RaEm’s disappearance Cheftu leaves her to follow her own course and he leaves Egypt as he searches for Chloe. Taken prisoner and made a slave he travels northward to where Chloe is still living as a goddess and a prisoner in the city.
Reunited at last Cheftu and Chloe realise that they are living in a city which will be on the losing side of a battle that will be part of the birth of Israel. Carefully planning their escape they leave the city to find a place where they can live together in peace. But even the best-laid plans have a way of backfiring as destiny interferes once again.
In this historical time Chloe finds herself elevated to a goddess and then sold into slavery. For the first time in her travels she is not someone of importance and the strain begins to show.
For the first time also, Chloe and Cheftu have the opportunity to make a life together that is more normal than their usual adventures. They are no longer running for their lives or embroiled in intrigue and for the first time they can let their relationship progress.
Chloe is convinced that she has come through time just to be with Cheftu, he however believes that they have a more important destiny and he is determined to follow it through.
With a new look at the biblical story of the birth of Israel Suzanne Frank has returned to the high standard that she showed in Reflections in the Nile.
Complex and well researched Ms Frank has taken this time period and
made it her own.
