The Sorcerer's Lady by Debra Dier is part of the Timeswept series and is
a re-issue.
Connor knew even in the year 889 who his soul mate was. He had visited her in their dream world each full moon night since they were young children and over the years the friendship they shared became desire and love.
In 1889 Laura Sullivan and her kind Aunt Sophie were about to witness the arrival of the tempting viking in their Boston library.
Sophie had found the book on witchcraft and it was through this that she discovered the verse which would bring "Laura's beloved to her side". Calling out the words with her voice, Laura silently echoed them as she pictured the nameless man of her dreams, only to have him appear right before her eyes.
Connor's arrival in the future had been foretold by his Aunt Aisling what he did not know was that Aisling had kept a good deal of information from him, including the dangers he would have to face 1000 years in the future.
In both the 9th century and the 19th century the world of the sorcerers is governed by those who reside at Avallon. Connor is only half sorcerer and is not a part of this community. However when he is called to the 19th century his mother beseeches the rulers to send him back to her. Ciara does not realise that she has placed her own son in danger by drawing the attention of the paranoid 19th century rulers to her powerful son.
Over the 1000 years since his departure Connor finds that the world has changed a great deal; there are new inventions and his people are fewer and weaker than before. Only half sorcerer himself he is still far more powerful than anyone in the world he finds himself in. He soon sets out to explore with the cautious Laura at his side as she instructs him on how to behave in the Society.
Followed at a distance by the wary sorcerers of Avallon Connor is on borrowed time until they make a decision as to his fate - whether to let him live or to destroy him to save themselves.
Connor is, at first, unaware of the attention he is drawing or the danger he is in. His only thoughts are that he is at last face to face with the woman of his dreams and his quest to win her heart in the real world is much harder than he would ever have imagined.
Laura Sullivan has her mother's acceptable blood but her father is Irish and to the snobby Boston Society she has never been accepted as quite good enough. Living with her busy father, Daniel Sullivan, and chaperoned by Aunt Sophie after her mother's death Laura knows that her father wishes her to marry the obnoxious Philip Gardner.
The successful match would give her a place in society and provide her father with a son-in-law who is capable of running the shipping company after himself. The fact that she does not love, or even like Philip is not a thought that occurs to Daniel. He wants the best for his only child.
Aunt Sophie on the other hand knows that marrying a man she does not love is not what would be best for Laura. Seeing the attraction that Laura and Connor have for each other Sophie decides to pass Connor off as her cousin and sets out with her matchmaking scheme.
Laura knows that her feelings for Connor are returned by him, but she cannot bear to let down her father by refusing to marry Philip. Since her father is rarely home Laura has ample time to spend with her visiting Viking as he sets out to win her heart.
When she can no longer avoid the inevitable Laura gives way to her passion and goes willingly into Connor's arms. But what she does not know is that Connor is a sorcerer and when she finds out she must make the choice of accepting him as he is or losing him forever. A decision echoed by her father when he discovers that Sophie, who he has grown to love, is a witch, albeit a poor one.
This is a novel that is slower paced than most but all the better for it. With a wonderful hero and a delightful cast of secondary characters this enchanting book is well worth reading.
