Son of the Morning

Son of the Morning by Linda HowardSon of the Morning by Linda Howard is a gripping thriller and drastically different to most of the other time travel books reviewed on this site.  Despite the fact that it does not follow the same type of story line as the others there is a time travel angle to the novel and by popular demand I am including it on this site.

Grace St John is a scholar who is an expert at translating ancient manuscripts.  Her latest assignment is to decipher some old papers that are more dangerous and intriguing than she could ever have imagined.

By complete chance she finds herself spared death at the hands of her boss, Parrish Sawyer.  But as witness to the murder of her husband and brother her ordeal is just beginning.  Hearing the killer's plot to frame her for their murders and making her own death appear as a suicide she knows that she cannot turn to the police and goes on the run.

Completely unprepared for life on the streets Grace takes on one identity after another in her attempts to evade her boss.  Her only clue to the whole business is the papers she has, her family has died for what they contain and she is driven to discover the secrets they hold.

Black Niall is a 14th century Knight of the Templar.  When the order of knights is destroyed it is his purpose to protect the Templar's secret for all eternity.  The secret of time travel, known as the Power.  As the Guardian it is his responsibility to stop the Foundation, a group dedicated to discovering the secret, from ever acquiring the Power.

In their dreams Grace and Niall reach to each other across the centuries.  Grace knows that it is Niall she dreams of and that he is somehow connected to the mystery she is slowly unravelling.  Niall on the other hand can only sense the presence of Grace and knows neither who she is nor what she wants.

For Grace the documents are becoming an obsession, as is the mysterious Niall.  It is only when she completes her work on the papers and follows the cryptic instructions that she discovers just what power she has and why they are so valuable.  For with the power to travel through time there would be no stopping the murderer Parrish.

Grace realises that the only person who can save her is Niall and with a determination to make Parrish pay for his crimes her only hope is to travel back to the 14th century and enlist the knight's help.

But Grace is not out of danger yet - she must find a way to complete her quest and get to the treasure that is guarded by Niall.  And the fate for anyone entering the Treasure Room is death, no matter who.

For Niall, Grace is the answer to his dreams, his dreams of a wife and family.  How can he contemplate killing the woman he loves?  Even when she is trespassing on ground more dangerous than quicksand and is more tempting than any other woman he has ever known, tempting enough to convince him to break his vows.

A marvellously gripping thriller that shows that no one is quite as they seem and you can never tell who your friends are, or who is your enemy either.
