The SkyPirate
The SkyPirate by Justine Davis is the sequel to Lord
of the Storm and is the story of Captain Califa Claxton and Dax Silverbrake,
the SkyPirate.
The story picks up where Califa is suffering the punishment of her betrayal of the Coalition. The Coalition has demanded a gold collar slave for the escape of the gold collar slave, Dare. Now the captain is a slave herself and imprisoned with Rina, a girl under the protection of Dax who is determined to break her out of the jail.
Tricking him into breaking her out of the jail too Califa knows that she can never let him know who she really is without risking her life. For Dax has the controller of the gold collar she now wears and therefore holds her life in his hands. Were he to find out her true identity she knows that her life would be over. What she has to find is either a way to remove the collar from her neck or to get the controller and escape. Both seem impossible tasks.
Slowly building up a trust with the crew of his ship, Califa finds herself eventually accepted by them but still she is a slave and Dax cannot relinquish the controller of the collar without knowing whom she is and what she was enslaved for.
Dax meanwhile is a man with his own secrets. An enemy of the Coalition, few realise where he is truly from and he is more than happy for that secret to remain hidden. For in his heart he knows that by becoming a skypirate he has betrayed everything his people stand for and committed the worst treason of all. Unable to return home again and living from day to day Dax and his crew battle the Coalition in their own way as the war continues.
Dax, torn apart by guilt, risks his life on an almost daily basis as he tries to make amends for the treason he believes he has committed by surviving the destruction on his planet.
Unable to confide in his crew the terrible crime he has committed he senses in Califa that she could be the one to understand. But she has secrets of her own.
Cautious of what to tell Dax, Califa only confides what is necessary for her survival and keeps the most dangerous secret she possesses buried. Both their secrets seem safe until one day in a temper Califa accidentally reveals who she is and the truth about both she and Dax is out.
Not until they talk does Dax know that he is not the only one to survive the Coalition’s attack on his planet and that even now the remains of his people are fighting a battle for survival.
Together Dax and Califa must face up to their pasts and return once more to Dax’s home planet where Dax must answer to his crimes and Califa must face her former slave who now has the power to destroy both her and Dax and take away the love she has found with Dax.
