Sins of the Night by Sherrilyn
Kenyon is quite possibly my favourite book in the series so far. I know I seem
to say that for all of them, but what else can I say when a series keeps getting
better and better like this one does?
Alexion is the title of Ash’s right-hand man, and although it is not his actual
name it is the one he goes by and I won’t spoil it for those who still haven’t
read the book as to what name he was previously known as.
Although he doesn’t really know Ash at all by living in his home on Katoteros
through Alexion’s eyes we see more of Ash and Simi than the brief glimpses that
we have in previous books.
Alexion is the right-hand of the devil, and the one who tracks down the
Dark-Hunters that have broken the codes that they live by. He is the one that
hands out justice on behalf of Ash, who as leader of the Dark-Hunters is pretty
much run off of his feet all the time anyway. Something that became very clear
in the short story Winter Born.
Alexion’s latest assignment has brought him to the door of Dangereuse “Danger”
St Richard.
His first task though is to convince Danger’s Squire that he is in fact
Acheron’s Squire, so thank goodness that Alexion has a whole host of powers
available to him for his time in the mortal world.
What he doesn’t have is time, for Alexion has just ten days to determine exactly
what is happening in the Dark-Hunter community, to find out who, if anyone, is
about to betray them all and to keep the peace. For at the end of that time one
way or another things would end.
Danger herself is not convinced of the arguments of Kyros and the others who are
starting to turn on Acheron. She senses that there is something else going on
and calls for Acheron’s help, fearing that her friends are in danger for risking
the wrath of their leader.
What she gets is more than she bargained for when Alexion arrives but it is only
with his help that they will be able to uncover the truth.
Alexion himself has his own history with Kyros and he is hardly an impartial
observer in this particular mission, and he knows that if Kyros is proven to be
a traitor there is nothing he will be able to do to save him. He can only hope
that his investigation into things reveals that it is someone else pulling the
strings of the Dark-Hunters, someone else who he will have to destroy, instead
of his old friend.
Like many of the stories in this series it is the secondary stories that hold my
attention for more than the main story. In this case the story of the Simi and
her family is by far my favourite of the sub-stories and I thoroughly enjoyed
seeing how different a demon can be without the influence of Acheron and Alexion,
who of course spoil Simi far too much for her own good.
I think however that what I liked most about this story is that even though it
is a romance novel, and even though there is the obligatory happy ending, it
wasn’t quite the perfect happy ending, though it was close enough that it
perhaps doesn’t matter. However by making the ending not entirely perfect it
gave the story a touch of realism and shows that even though his powers are
great even Acheron can’t wave the proverbial magic wand and fix things entirely.
A spellbinding addition to the series which I am hesitant to say more about
without revealing too many spoilers for the novel which is intricately plotted
throughout.
