Susan Krinard is an author whose novels range from werewolves and ghosts to time travels and futuristics. As such an author many of her novels are featured on this site and there are more to come.
Although she has previously been interviewed here, I thought it was about time we had an update from her, and she has kindly agreed to take time out of her busy schedule for a quick update interview about her new and upcoming books.
Please welcome back Susan Krinard.
LB Kinsman's Oath is going to be hitting the shelves this May. Could you tell us about this book please?
SK KO is the sequel to the novella "Kinsman" in the NY Times bestselling anthology OUT OF THIS WORLD. It's set in the same universe and features the son of the protagonists in "Kinsman," so though it's a sequel to the novella it can be read alone. It's set in a future where lost colonies of Earth have finally come together in alliance, but must deal with the catlike alien Shaauri, who are very jealous of their territory. Only certain telepathic humans are able to communicate with the shaauri--the Kinsman. In KO, Ronan was kidnapped by shaauri as a child and believes he owes his loyalty to the aliens. But his loyalties are tested when he's rescued b y the starship captain Cynara D'Accorso of the human Concordat, and he finds himself among humans again for the first time in more than twenty years. He's deeply attracted to Cynara, and vice versa. Soon even Ronan isn't sure what he is ... or who might be using him for their own hidden purposes.
LB I see that you have two other stories coming out later in the year, Murder Entailed and Shield of the Sky. Can you tell us what these are about please?
SK "Murder Entailed" is a short story in the anthology MURDER BY MAGICK, a collection in which all the stories are murder mysteries involving magic of some kind, all with a fantasy base. Mine is set in an alternate England in which magic is passed down from generation to generation, much as land was "entailed" on the eldest in the landowning classes. The story takes place on a country estate, and does involve a bit of romance. The book is out with Warner books in October.
SHIELD OF THE SKY is my first "straight" fantasy and is set in an alternate history around 300 B.C.E., in the Mediterranean world of ancient Greece. The heroine is what we now call an "Amazon" warrior, and the main hero is a panther shapeshifter. They, along with a female shaman from the far north, an eccentric Greek philosopher, and a stubborn young fighter from the land of Tiberia, must fight the evil of the Stone God, a deity who is destroying all other gods and spirits of nature while enslaving the peoples of the world. The heroes go on a worldwide quest to seek the mysterious weapons that can overcome the Stone God and his minions. SHIELD has adventure, the clash of different cultures, and two romances, though the center of the story is fantasy, not romance. I expect this to be the first in a five-book series for Luna. SHIELD will be out in October.
LB I have to admit that Twice a Hero is amongst my favourite of your novels to date. Do you intend to write any more time travels in the foreseeable future?
SK It doesn't look likely. I've just switched publishers, and my contract calls for another werewolf book (which I'm currently writing,. a June 2005 HQN release), a sequel to THE FOREST LORD and a new contemporary paranormal, possibly the beginning of a new series. It's certainly hard to find time to write all the books I'd like to write, and I'm now doing two books a year ... my absolute limit in terms of speed!
LB The Forest Lord is the first book in a series. What stage are you at with future instalments?
SK As I mentioned above, there will be one sequel, Donal's story. Unfortunately, my change of publishers made the full projected series unlikely, since my new publishers wants other things from me. this is, alas, the way of the publishing world--nothing is certain over the long run!
LB You indicate that you want to continue to stretch the boundaries of the romance genre. How you do feel you have done this so far and what other ways do you have in mind for keeping the paranormal genre alive?
SK Though I feel that I've done some stretching and would still like to do more, I also feel that some of the directions I've chosen have somewhat limited my "commercial appeal," because I never like to write the same book twice. I try to find a new twist, new characters. In some ways, I almost feel that I've gone as far as I can go in stretching romance boundaries. That's one reason I'm really pleased to be able to write fantasy, which affords me so much greater freedom to explore some ideas and characters. Yet, at the same time, I'm able to include romantic elements in my fantasy. For me, it's the best of both worlds.
LB And finally, do you have a message for your readers out there?
SK Though I'm very slow these days in answering e-mails, I love to hear from readers. Please write me at sue@susankrinard.com, and visit my web page at www.susankrinard.com. I should be getting back to writing a quarterly newsletter after a gap of several months (due to very tight deadlines). I thank each and every reader who's risked time and money on my books, and I hope you enjoy my future endeavors!
All that is left is for me to thank you once again for taking the time to answer a few questions for the Magical Romance Website.
Thanks again and we are all looking forward to reading your new books.
