Razzle
Dazzle by Lisa Hendrix is part of the Magical Love series published by
Penguin Putnam.
Mason Alexander is struggling to save his family
business. Left with debts from his father he is unable to provide
the funds that will make the business successful. Unable to get a
loan from any legitimate source he decides that marrying money is the only
solution available to him.
The money he intends to marry is that of the daughter of his competitor, Caroline Wickersham.
Caroline Whickersham is rich and has her father wrapped securely around her little finger. She has everything she could possibly want....except acceptance in the circles of Seattle Society that she wishes to be a part of. The Alexander name will gain her this acceptance, and Mason uses this to gain her hand in marriage.
But his mother and sister (Tish and Miranda) do not like the idea of Mason marrying without love and being practitioners of the Craft they decide to whip up a little love potion to smooth things on their way.
However Mason does not approve of their meddling in either magic or his life and when he discovers the scam he makes Tish promise not to meddle further. However Tish immediately sees the loophole in this and Miranda is soon back on course for completing their mission of love.
However when Miranda slips the potion into the drink she has no way of knowing that it will not be Caroline that drinks it, but Raine, a gardner with an interest in Feng Shui.
Mason soon realises from his relatives behaviour that they have slipped something into the drinks and decides that he will teach them a lesson as his confrontation with them had obviously not worked.
Mason does not believe in magic or potions but knows that his mother and sister believe that the potion will work. With this in mind he persuades Raine to play along with him and pretend to be in love with him. He likewise will do the same and hope that the meddlers will confess.
However this plan backfires when they merely decide to try and reverse the spell when the time is right for such a spell.
Keeping up the charade while Caroline is out of town, Mason and Raine are soon spending a lot of time together and for Raine the charade starts to become a reality as her feelings for Mason grow.
Meanwhile Raine also has a mission of her own. As head of a group of people protesting against a development project she is determined to stop the construction of a building which she knows, through the learning of Feng Shui, will kill the area.
When Raine finds out it is Mason who is behind the project she is determined to use their time together to try and bring him around to her way of thinking without him knowing that she is the leader of the group making his life difficult. But Mason has had all the knowledge of "New Age rubbish" that he wants from his mother and sister and will not listen to anything that Raine has to say on the topic.
This is a delightfully funny book with a whole of host of charming characters each with their own private agenda and determination to do what is best for everyone else with little thought for the consequences, most of which are hilarious.
The book also offers the reader a little insight
into the art of Feng Shui and how it is relevant in the world today.
An interesting aspect of novel for those with an interest in this area.
