Queen of the Sun

Queen of the Sun by Janeen O'Kerry
Queen of the Sun by Janeen O'Kerry is a time travel romance set once more in the time of ancient Ireland.

Teresa MacEgan is an American on holiday in Ireland.  Escaping for her life for a few weeks she is unprepared for a permanent vacation as she and her horse Firelair are whisked back to the time of ancient Eire on an enchanted Midsummer's Eve.

King Conaire is ruler of Dun Cath.  Travelling home once more without a bride he knows instantly that Teresa is the woman he has been waiting for.  Using a little magic from the Druids he gifts her with a ring that enables her to communicate with him and his people.  Discovering that Teresa is unable to find her way home he takes her to Dun Cath where she is greeted with suspicion and some awe.

Some of the people of the dun see her as a visitor from the Other World.  Others resent her presence and are soon plotting against her.

But the person with the most plots is undoubtedly King Conaire himself as he uses every means at his disposal to "test" his strange guest is worthy of being his queen.

Teresa is not pleased at having her beauty, humility and courage tested, especially when she has explained to King Conaire that she has no intention of becoming his queen.

But Conaire is determined and continues his tests which she passes. much to her annoyance.

Teresa soon finds a way to fit in at Dun Cath and uses her time to work with the horses.  Her own horse, a true mare is proof enough that she is well qualified in this area.  But although she dresses and works like the others Teresa is determined to to relinquish her freedom to anyone, not even a king.

Meanwhile Lonan, a man who believes he should have been made king is determined to bring about the downfall of King Conaire and soon sees that Teresa could well be the key to his plan.

Soon it is not a question of whether Teresa will become Conaire's Queen but whether Conaire will remain as king or sacrifice his kingdom for the woman he has chosen.

This novel is another unique tribute to the time travel genre from Janeen O'Kerry.  With strong characters and plots this is time travel at its best.  A great novel from an author who is brave enough to stray away from the usual settings to bring originality back to the genre.
