Prince of Charming by Karen Fox is part of the Magical Love series
from Jove.
Robin Goodfellow has been trapped in his portrait for two hundred years
by Titania, Queen of the Fae. Able to see and hear the world around him
but never able to participate he is half fae and therefore immortal and
held by the spell which entrapped him all those years ago.
Kate Carmichael’s mother had died when she was younger. Her father
had gone to try and find a way out of their debts by searching for the
mythical gold of the fae. He had left her in the care of her guardian
Zelma St John and had never returned. Believing him dead she refused
to believe that he had deserted her and continued with her life.
Now her guardian has died and Kate finds that she did not leave a will. The consequences of this mean that she is about to be evicted from the only home she has known for the last twelve years unless she can find where Nana hid her will.
At the time of her greatest despair she finds the hidden words in the painting of Robin Goodfellow. And as she speaks his name he is released from the portrait.
But Titania’s spell is not so easily broken and Oberon’s loophole which has resulted in his escape has a slight catch. Robin is no longer trapped in the painting, but he is tied to the person who frees him. Unable to move longer than a short distance away Robin finds himself not entirely free and instead tied to Kate.
To break the curse entirely is impossible without Titania who cast the spell in the first place. And Robin knows that the only way he can convince her to break the spell is to find her circlet. The circlet had been given, by Oberon to Robin’s mother and he hopes that returning it to her will be enough to appease her and set him free.
Kate has little self-confidence and is one of those rare heroines who is slightly over-weight instead of the usual stick insect figures. She cannot believe that Robin would ever be interested in her, even though she had been attracted to him long before his release from the portrait. She is embarrassed by the fact that she had confided in the silent portrait over the years and only now knows that Robin was aware of her presence all the time and knows her darkest secrets.
Together though they search for the missing circlet and the will in the hope of freeing Robin and gaining back Kate’s home. But both searches appear to be in vein.
Meanwhile Titania knows that Robin has escaped and plots to return him to the portrait by killing Kate and thus destroying his link to her.
As they race to find the will and the circlet they find themselves on the run from Titania but realise that they will soon have to face her and that their time together will be limited.
Kate struggles to find her place in the world without Nana as Robin struggles to discover if he belongs in the mortal world or the realm of the fae. The reader knows it is only a matter of time before they realise that it is inevitable that they belong together.
Lots of twists and some very humorous moments, in particular I love the discovery that the entrance to the realm of the fae is in Disneyland…where else?
The reader is quickly drawn into the story and you soon find that you
do not want to leave it. A good thing there is a sequel of sorts
in the form of Buttercup Baby.
