Out of the Blue

Out of the Blue by Katherine Deauxville
Out of the Blue by Katherine Deauxville takes close encounters to a whole new level in this wacky story.

Maryellen Caswell is a modern woman who suddenly finds herself possessed.  Not with a ghostly spirit though, no she finds herself possessed with Sub-commander Ur Targon who now appears to be sharing her body.

Naturally Maryellen’s first reaction is that she is having some form of hallucination or breakdown.  Her next stop is the shrink and his therapy group.  But no matter what she tries she cannot rid herself of her intrusive guest.

It is not long before her (or rather his) actions come to the attention of the police who pass on the report about the outer-space visitor to the FBI who are looking for suspicious aliens.  Viewers of the X-Files will spot immediately the similarity between FBI Agent Wolf Madder and Fox Mulder.

Targon meanwhile is seeking out corruption on “Styrex Three” as he refers to Earth.  But also a priority is to find a better host body than the one he is in.  Not that he has anything against Maryellen’s body and he does appreciate it, he would just rather appreciate it from outside of it.

Targon can become more real (he is human in form) after drinking orange juice and after sex, but the effects are temporary and he must find a new body as soon as possible.

Chased by the FBI, the various members of the therapy group and Targon’s enemies who are determined to see him dead at any cost, Targon and Maryellen find themselves on the run and becoming closer all the time as the danger draws in.

Although at first Targon is clearly annoyed at being on Earth and sees the people there as beneath him it is not long before he is convinced that this is where he belongs.

This book is a fast-paced chase and has some hilarious moments.  My only complaint is that I didn’t like the ending.  Without spoiling it for those who have not yet read the book, I will just say that I did not like where Targon ended up.  I can’t pinpoint exactly what it was I did not like, but there was something that seemed just a little too neat and convenient.  I also would have liked to have had a glimpse at Targon’s world rather than remaining on Earth.

Other than that this book is a great read.
