Out of Time by Lynn Abbey is more of a science fiction novel than a
romance but is firmly in the time travel genre with a potential for sequels
with more of a romantic interest in them.
Emma Merrigan is a woman who has passed middle age and been through two marriages. Single, she now resides with her two cats Spin and Charm and works at the local university’s library.
Emma is convinced that her life is ordinary until the day that she stumbles across a young woman in the library who she then takes home with her.
The woman is Jennifer and she is having problems with her boyfriend Bran. Emma resolves to get to the bottom of the problem and finds that as one question gets answered more appear. Emma is even ready to accept the possibility that Jennifer and Bran have been cursed, though by who and when and why are just more questions that she needs answering.
As she delves into the problem she finds that her own nightmares from childhood are returning to haunt her. Finding herself on a desolate wasteland she fights what she believes are merely monsters from her dreams.
Until the day she finds a box in her cellar from her long departed mother.
Emma had believed her mother had died until the day she was researching something in the newspaper archives and found the story of her mother’s disappearance. The box does not shed any light on why her mother left…it only appears to show that her mother was mentally unstable and believed it was her calling in life to fight curses. Not only that she expected Emma to follow in her footsteps.
Finding that she had missed her calling in life was not something that Emma wanted to know. Nor did she want to know anything about her mother.
But Emma cannot turn her back on her heritage for only she has the power to save the couple. And this can be done by travelling across the wasteland of her nightmares and journeying back across time to find the root of the curse that is ruining their lives and vanquishing it before its strength grows.
Emma finds that she has two allies in her quest, her mysterious mother who has just re-entered her life and the even more mysterious man she names Aramis because of his resemblance to the musketeer of the same name. But each of her two allies has their own secrets and in the dangerous world that she has now entered it is difficult for her to know who to trust. Somehow she must find her own way through the challenges that she faces and with the help of her colleague Mark she will save Bran and Jennifer.
This novel took some time to get going but once Emma realised what her
power was the dramatic twists of the story combine to produce a gripping
novel that while it is very low on the romance is very big on the fantasy
and the possibility of a sequel is certainly left open. Possibly
a sequel with a little more romance in the shape of Aramis? However
this is primarily a sci-fi novel and not a romance novel and the reader
should be aware of that before choosing this one. As a sci-fi novel
I would rate it as a 3, as a romance it rates…
