In
the Midnight Hour by Kimberly Randell is an amusing addition to the Haunting
Hearts series published by Penguin Putnam/Jove.
Valentine "Val" Tremaine was murdered in his bed in 1848 by the father of a woman who claimed he was the man who had ruined her.
Val himself could not recall the events of the night in question and was destined to haunt his bed until he discovered the truth of that fatal night, and whether he had left a child behind.
Veronica "Ronnie" Parish is sensible and practical but is drawn to the large expensive antique bed and buys it against her better judgement.....ghost included.
Ronnie is a 26 year old university student. She is also a virgin, the only type of woman who Val does not allow himself to get involved with. Unfortunately for Val he does not realise this fact until it is too late and he is in way over his head.
One of Ronnie's classes is Professor Guidry's human sexuality class. The Professor is a strict man who Ronnie cannot approach for help when her interfering ghost decides to change her project topic from society's stereotype of boys and girls and its influence on social development to Fifty Steps to Ultimate Sexual Fulfillment.
So Ronnie finds herself with the choice of failing the course or enlisting the help of the legendary lover Valentine Tremaine.
The inexperienced Ronnie is extremely attracted to Val but he keeps himself at a distance because of her virgin status. But the longer they are thrown into each others company with the handsome ghost tutoring Ronnie for her paper, the more Val wishes that he were alive again so that he could have a future with his student.
But just as much as he wants a future with Ronnie, Val also wants to know what happened to the woman he left behind in the past. And it is up to Ronnie to discover what happened to Claire so that Val can finally rest in peace, even if it means losing the man she has come to love, and who despite his efforts to keep his distance falls for her too.
A delightfully amusing story with a host of secondary characters, all with their own tangled love lives, who the reader comes to care about as much as Val and Ronnie.
