MacKenzie's Magic

      MacKenzie's Magic by Debra Dier

MacKenzie’s Magic by Debra Dier is a romance novel that could be a time travel novel or a reincarnation novel.  On the other hand it could merely be one of those novels where a character manages to change overnight into a more likeable person.  It is left for the reader to ultimately decide, personally I believe that it is time travel.

Jane Stanbridge is newly wed to Dominic Stanbridge, a notorious rake and a man who she neither loves nor can ever see herself even liking.  That is until an apparent accident on her wedding night leaves him with a bump on the head and a new personality.

Claiming to be Colin MacKenzie, a Scottish Earl from 300 years in the past, his story appears to be outrageous and impossible.  Jane is sure that it is a trick to win her around but just how he is accomplishing the job she cannot imagine.  A part of her wants to believe that he is Colin but for every piece of proof he places before her there is also a logical explanation.  She knows that Dominic has promised that she will be seduced by him and that he is a master manipulator and game-player.  How can she believe that his ridiculous story is anything but a trick to win her around.

While a part of her tells her that he knows things about Scotland that only Colin would know another part of her says that someone could research the family and possibly discover the same facts.

More difficult to explain is that Dominic has suffered from a fear of heights for much of his life.  However Colin has no such fear and proves the same on the cliffs near his Scottish home.  But while this could indicate another person is living in the body of Dominic, Jane realises that it could also just be a side effect from the blow to the head or an elaborate web of lies.

The only thing that Jane cannot rationalise away is how the man she hated days before can stir in her feelings of love and passion such as she has never felt before.

With lots of humour, mainly from Colin’s early antics upon finding himself in another time this novel has plenty of laughs as we see the not so modern London through the eyes of the Highlander.

Add to the romance a hint of mystery and murder and you have a wonderful story that leaves just a bit of mystery for the reader to wonder about after the final page has been turned.

Amusing in places this novel is fast-paced and leaves it clearly in the readers’ hands to make the ultimate decision as to whether the hero of the novel had travelled in time or not.  I hope that he had, and that the real Dominic Stanbridge was sent back to the life of Colin MacKenzie, which would be a very interesting book to read.
