Lady Moonlight by Kate Freiman is the first of the novels I am going
to be including in the Faery Realm section of my website. It is also
the one which will set the standard for other novels of this genre.
This enchanting novel tells the story of Aisling Ahearn, a spirited beauty who flees from her father when he tries to force her to wed a man not of her choosing. Desperate and alone with her pursuers hot on her heels Aisling is happy to accept the help of a leprechaun and lets him hide her from the vision of her father and intended groom Ambros O'Hara.
Little does Aisling realise that she is now in an even worse predicament.
Acorn Bittersweet has an agenda of his own and after helping Aisling he is quick to name his price. She must show her gratitude by marrying himself.
Dismayed by this turn of events Aisling manages to convince the leprechaun to give her time to search for her true love. But the tricky leprechaun is not to be beaten so easily and captures the spirit of her beloved mare Luna in a charm and sets the conditions for Aisling in her search for her One True Love.
Aisling is given 100 years to find her love, until 1999 and she will only appear to mortals in the form of her mystical white mare Luna.
Acorn Bittersweet then leaves to enjoy the last 100 years of his bachelor existance and leaves Aisling to herself.
Aisling is not alone however, unbeknownst to both herself and Acorn Bittersweet her Aunt Rainbow-and-Silver-Lining had observed the exchange and meddled in the spell a little to give Aisling the power to appear in human form on the nights of the full moon.
Aunt Rainbow also decreed that the O'Hara decendants would be successful in business and unluckily in love until the spell over Aisling was broken - and that only an O'Hara man falling in love with Aisling could break the spell. The man to break the spell must declare and show his love for her three times to break the curse over his family or his line would end when Aisling married Acorn.
Not an easy task but for Aisling 100 years seemed such a long time and she was sure she could find her One True Love in all that time and was just as sure that she could never love an O'Hara.
Conlan Ambros O'Hara Sloan is the last in the line of the O'Hara men. Unlucky in love he had given his heart to the mysterious Aisling at the age of 19 and after her betrayal he resolved to stay away from Ireland and was only now returning to see his grandfather who was convinced that Conlan was the man to break the curse on the family.
But Conlan did not believe in curses, spells or women that changed into horses. So what if he had never seen Aisling and her horse at the same time. So what if Aisling only came to him on the nights of the full moon. So what if she insisted that magic and curses were real.
Conlan was convinced that everything could be explained away without resorting to magical theories.
But for Conlan to break the curse he must begin to believe in magic and love and hardest of all, he must convince Aisling that although he is an O'Hara she has nothing to fear from him and that he will not betray her as his ancestor had done 100 years before.
And enchanting tale which takes place in both the present day and the mystical world of the Faery Realm. Kate Freiman opens the door to a whole world beneath the hills of Ireland, a world which once entered you never want to leave. Even if the heroinne of the novel does :-)
A hauntingly beautiful romance set in the even more romantic setting of the hills of Ireland.
This is a novel that will set the standard for others who write about the Faery Realm of the Emerald Isle.
