The Traveller by Lynn Kurland is a time travel story about a friend of Elizabeth, the heroine of A Dance Through Time, and her own knight in shining armour Sir William de Piaget.

Julianna Nelson was the college roommate of Elizabeth but had lost touch with her over the years.  She had got back in contact with her after seeing one of her romance novels, a time travel about a woman who finds true love in Medieval Scotland....sounding familiar?  Thought so.

Elizabeth was delighted to hear from Julianna again and invited her over to Scotland to visit.  The letter gave Julianna clear warnings about being careful where to tread in the grounds and even a cryptic warning about benches in Gramercy Park.  Julianna isn't sure whether to take the warnings and the accompanying map of time gates as a joke or a sign that her friend has become unhinged.

Deciding that a little day dreaming on a bench in Gramercy Park is a good way to spend the afternoon, in spite of the warnings, Julianna soon finds herself in another time.  Well she really has no one to blame but herself...she can't say she wasn't warned.

But warnings or not, Julianna is unable to believe what she is seeing when she finds herself near to a keep on the England/Scotland border in the year 1299.

Sir William de Piaget had not expected any sort of inheritance but inheritance he got.  The great grandson of Robin of Artane (hero of If I Had You), William was the second son of Hubert of Artane and was travelling in France when he received news of his grandfather Phillip's demise.  He knew that his inheritance in the form of a keep wasn't much but it was more than he was expecting and so he returned from France to claim it.

The only problem was that his useless father Hubert had got their first and William, with only his squire to assist him, was now without the men to wrest his inheritance out of the hands of his father.

Needing all the help he could get, William took a vow before a priest in the hopes that this would assist him in his quest.  That vow included a part to protect, defend and rescue all maidens in distress.  And Julianna is certainly a maiden in distress...and no matter how much he would like to leave her to her own devices and continue with his mission, William is a man who would never break a vow.

Taking Julianna into his care, rather than leave her sitting rocking and singing to herself, William believes the woman he has rescued to be a saint with her bag a relic sack (containing of course, modern marvels and sweets as well as the directions back home).

William soon finds that he must choose between his inheritance and Julianna...it's a romance so no contest really...and then between his time and hers.

This is probably one of my favourite anthology stories from Ms Kurland. It has a bit of everything in it and reading it is a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
