Infinity by Maggie Shayne is the second novel in her continuing series
about immortal witches.
Arianna was introduced to us in Eternity as she sought out her re-born sister Raven St James. Reunited with her sister and in possession of the heart of her lost love Nicodimus Arianna sets out on her own quest for happiness.
Nicodimus had come to her home in the highlands of Scotland several times during her life but it was his final visit after the first death of Raven that was to set them both on their paths of destiny.
Arianna had always been apart from the other girls in her village. On the outskirts of society she studied with the local witches as she strived to find a way to bring her sister back to her. She had already called out for Raven to come back to her within her lifetime with the same face and name. She had no way of knowing that she was an immortal witch whose life was centuries longer than that of mortals. In the meantime she had her own life to live and she intended to live it with Nicodimus despite his protests to the contrary.
Nicodimus had studied Arianna for years and knew immediately what she was, for he too was an immortal high witch. Unlike Arianna who cares nothing for either propriety or her own safety, Nicodimus has learnt over his many years to be cautious and he can see the dangerous path she treads as she tempts the people of her village to discover her secret.
Things are soon brought to a head and Nicodimus finds himself married to Arianna to protect her from the lynch mob in the village.
The dangerous times are never far away and Nicodimus finds that his past is catching up with him as the dark immortal brothers of his first wife discover his sanctuary and plot their revenge for the death of their sister and nephews.
Destined to be together but parted by fate Arianna finds herself relying on her own initiative to escape her capture only to have Nicodimus ride to her rescue and believe her to be betraying him. Before they can resolve their problems Nicodimus's heart is stolen from his body and taken to sustain one of the Dark Ones.
No longer alive but not entirely dead Nicodimus awaits his fate and the return of the woman who betrayed him.
Arianna has at last found the way to bring her love back to life, but things will not be as easy as she believes. The dangers of the past have followed her through the years and are closing in fast. Only with her family can she find the strength to win the final battle and reclaim the love of her husband.
A wonderful novel and a fantastic sequel that opens up even more possibilities in this world of magic. A great hero and heroine in a vividly portrayed setting make this a definite keeper.
Fans of this series will be pleased to know that there is more to come.
