      Immortality by Maggie Shayne

Immortality by Maggie Shayne is a short story which continues the story of Puabi which began in Destiny.

The last we saw of the Dark Witch Puabi she was trapped in the burning house of Nathan King, a fitting destiny for the evil murderess.

What we did not see is that she escaped from the house and after giving up on ever winning the love of Natum threw herself off of the cliffs and into the sea.  Injured by the fire and weakened she knew it would take a long time for her to die a final death.  She let the sea carry her and did not fight the continual deaths and rebirths.  This continued right up until she was pulled out of the sea by Matthew Fairchild, a man who had retreated from the world following the death of his wife.

Tormented by his past Matthew felt guilt that he could not make his wife Gabriella happy.  After she had committed suicide he had moved to his own private island with no visitors save for Murial who works for him and keeps him up to date with the business he had chosen over his wife, but that he now has no interest in.

The first thing that Matthew notices about the woman he has rescued is her resemblance to Gabriella.  He is looking at her twin, at least in appearance.  In personality though the two could not be more different.

Nursing her back to health he is surprised by her hostility towards him but finds himself falling for her spirit.  He knows that she is going to leave him as soon as the storm which keeps them trapped as passed over.

What neither of them realises is that there are forces greater than even a Dark Witch playing with their lives and that the past is about to catch up with both of them.

A nice ending for Puabi whose initial crime had only been to love a man who had already given his heart to another.  Knowing all that she had done in the past does make her not the most likeable of heroines but her remorse and redemption show that there may be hope for even the most evil of the Dark Witches.
