Immortal Rogues

      Trilogy

The Immortal Rogues trilogy by Debbie Raleigh are part of Zebra's Regency Romance Line.  Although the three books do stand alone they should be read in the order below to get the most out of them.  In particular, if you read the final one first there is a pretty big spoiler in it for the others.  Just so that you are forewarned.  And no, I will not reveal the spoiler here so don't worry.

My Lord Vampire by Debbie Raleigh

My Lord Vampire is the first book in the trilogy and is the story of Gideon Ravel and Sally Jenkins.

Gideon is a vampire who has lived for centuries behind The Veil, which basically means that he is living in a world separate from the mortal realm.  With no desires or passions in that world he and his brothers devote their years to studious pursuits and have no need for blood to survive.  Nor are they cursed to burn in the sunlight unless they return to the world of mortals and take human life.

But their world behind The Veil is in danger and so the most powerful vampire, Nefri goes into the mortal world in the disguise of a gypsy woman and gives to each of them an amulet, binding the same to them and entrusting them to their care.  Together the amulet pieces form a medallion which was used to create The Veil and could ultimately destroy it and return all vampires to the world of mortals.

Three vampires have escaped from the world of the vampires to try to obtain the amulets.  One vampire tracking each of the women.

To protect the maidens further three vampires are also sent into the mortal world to protect the women.  Gideon is one of these three vampires.

Arriving in London he sets about meeting and secretly protecting Simone Gilbert, a woman who is the toast of the town and has men falling over themselves to please her.  But despite this she remains aloof from those men and knows that should someone get close to her they will discover the secret she hides, that she is not Simone but rather her half sister Sally hidden behind her masquerade.

But try as she might Simone/Sally cannot get rid of Gideon who is determined to protect her from Tristan, another man who has made his interest in Simone clear and will do anything to get his hands on the amulet, including digging into her past.

My Lord Vampire is an interesting introduction into a new world of vampires.  Although not anywhere near as detailed and complex as the world of Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon this book is a nice quick read with good lead characters, although the secondary characters did come across as rather two dimensional.  A little short for my liking but those who enjoy the Regency Romances of this length and also enjoy paranormals I believe they will enjoy this one.

My Lord Eternity by Debbie Raleigh

My Lord Eternity is the second book in the series and the events in this appear to run in a parallel or only slightly after the first book in the series.

Lucien Valin is a vampire and a rogue and unlike his brothers he has never been entirely happy with the life behind The Veil.  A man who enjoys life and has little interest in books he is only too happy to return to the mortal world to protect Jocelyn Kingly who holds the second part of the amulet.  He does wonder however at whether he will be up to the task as he is so different from his brethren.

Jocelyn has survived the scandal of being compromised and has been turned out of her home by her parents to whom appearance is everything.  She has now made a new life for herself in which she works to help those less fortunate in the poorer parts of London.

Few others care about what she is trying to do for the women and children of the area and Jocelyn has only the support of her housekeeper and the one person who stood by her when the scandal broke.

Short of funds Jocelyn has no choice open to her than to rent out the attic room in her house to a suitable person.  Lucien however is far from suitable.   He is exactly the type of roguish charmer she is trying to avoid and she can tell that he will not stick to her house rules and leave her alone.

Lucien moves in with Jocelyn in order to protect her.  He does not imagine that he will fall in love with the headstrong young woman who does not seem to realise the danger she is in, even when the murders of women in the area begin to occur signalling the close proximity of Amadeus the vampire who is seeking her amulet.

Again this is a good little story and on the whole I think I liked it better than the first book in the series.  Certainly I felt that the villain of this particular instalment was a lot more developed as a character than in the others of the series.  With a sprinkling of humour and a fairly strong storyline this is my favourite of the series.

My Lord Immortality by Debbie Raleigh

My Lord Immortality is the third and final book in the Immortal Rogues trilogy and is the story of Sebastian and Amelia.

Sebastian is a scholar and was an ideal vampire to be living behind The Veil.  Unlike Gideon and Lucien he has not an easy manner to endear him to women and he believes that the best way he can protect Amelia and the amulet is from a distance.

Remaining hidden from her he takes a house a short distance away.  But when the vampire Drake Ramone moves in even closer to her he realises that he cannot keep away from her and protect at the same time.

Amelia lives with her housekeeper and her younger brother who is a grown man but with the mind of a child.  Her parents had wanted William placing in an asylum and so to save him from that fate Amelia gave up everything to live with him and care for him herself.

Drake can see how close Amelia is to William and how she will do anything for him and so engineers it so that the murders he commits appear to have been committed by William.  He believes that Amelia will hand over the amulet to save her brother from the hangman.

Fleeing with William from the Bow Street Runners, Amelia turns to Sebastian for help and moves into his house with him.  Sebastian takes them in but still fears that he is not good enough to protect them.

Meanwhile Drake has his own problems as the one who enlisted his help in obtaining the medallion appears to have his own agenda and Drake fears that he will not have the power that he desires.

Another nice little story although the plot twist in this final book was rather disappointing.  Because we have seen so little of the world of the vampires as soon as we discover that someone else is involved it is only natural to start wondering who it can be and realise that the suspense has vanished because of the lack of information in the preceding books.  As a suspenseful plot this series is quite poor, as romances they are enjoyable and as paranormals they are middle of the road in my estimation as the vampire heroes are rather tame compared to others.  However if you don't like the bad boy, domineering vampires this is a nice change of pace.

All in all the series is okay if not entirely to my taste...I much prefer the bad boy vampires myself.
