Heart of the Dove by Tracy Fobes is an enchanting tale of witchcraft and
love set in England in 1856.
Morgana Fey lived in 1593 until she was pronounced to be a witch by Edward Drakewyck and Henry Clairmont.
But she was not the only one with magical powers living in the small village of Somerton…Edward, the upstanding vicar and pillar of the community carried a spell book in his hands instead of a bible and sealed his family’s fate when he stole her magical dove and cast a sleeping spell on Morgana as her husband Christopher watched helplessly.
As she was put under the spell Morgana cursed Drakewyck and Clairmont families for all time:
“When the world is older and you are dead and I am sleeping in my bed, a Drakewyck witch and a Clairmont knave will awaken me from my lonely grave. They will love and the dove will be mine, and utter destruction will be thine.”
In 1856 Lucinda Drakewyck is a young woman and a practicing witch who has foreseen who own death. Gifted by her uncle and guardian with spell book (containing a warning of the curse) and the crystal dove she uses its power in hope of conjuring a vision of the warrior who will save her and then destroy them both. She is granted this vision and when Richard Clairmont comes upon her in the forest glen where she conducts her spells she recognises the face of the hero who will love her.
Richard however does not believe in magic or anything else. Wounded in the Crimean War he has returned to England and shut himself away from society and from the stares of the public. But as hard as he tries he cannot keep Lucinda at arms length and is attracted to her despite of everything.
But the curse of Morgana is still going strong and inadvertently the two star-crossed lovers awaken her from her enchanted sleep and thus invite her to complete the curse by destroying them both forever in payment of the deeds of their ancestors.
Faye Morgan (Morgana) soon works her way into the lives of Lucinda and Richard as she schemes to have her revenge. Using every power she possesses and all the hate in her soul she instils herself into the Clairmont home and works her magic to bring disease and death to the descendant’s of her captors.
In a race against time Lucinda and Richard delve into their ancestors’ murky pasts to discover the fates of Morgana and her husband. They do not like what they find but the past cannot be altered and they quickly realise that if anyone had cause to seek revenge against their families it would be Morgana.
Lucinda is convinced that it must be magic that defeats Morgana and realises that Faye is using her own magic against their families.
Only together and with the power of the crystal dove can Lucinda and Richard defeat the older witch and claim the love that they have found forever. But even that may not be enough in the final conflict.
Heart of the Dove is an enchanting tale of revenge and true love that
is wonderfully told and a welcome addition to the shelves any reader of
the paranormal genre.
