A Hitch in Time by Christine Holden is a time travel novel set in New Orleans and is part of the Time Passages series.

Drew Montague is a law student bringing up his young daughter alone.  Until now his parents have helped him with his finances but they have now issued him with an ultimatum.  The money will be stopped if he does not leave his studies and learn the family business.  Never having wanted to be a part of the family business Drew is torn between the course he wants to take and what is best for his daughter.  He cannot know that the decision is about to be taken out of his hands.

Finding an old pocket watch hanging from a hitching post he recites a childhood rhyme and finds himself sent back in time to the year 1853.

It is not long before Drew finds himself coming face to face with his great-great-grandfather, Rafe Montague, the man who is looked up to by the rest of the family generations.  However when Drew finds himself looking up to him it is because he has just been bested by him in a dual over the beautiful Marianne Beaufort.

Mistaken for his ancestor’s cousin Drew has no other option but to take on the identity of the son of a member of the family who disappeared.

Nursed back to health by Marianne he is surprised to find that she is engaged to be married to Rafe, something which he knows from the course of history is incorrect.

Soon Drew is torn two ways once again, does he stay with Marianne and try to persuade her to break her engagement to Rafe or does he continue to try to find a way back to the 20th century.  With his daughter living in the future there is no choice to be made and once again Drew knows that the welfare of his daughter must be placed before his own happiness.  And thus begins the search for the elusive watch with the power to take him home and away from Marianne.

But perhaps love can find a way to ensure that he does not have to give up the love of a lifetime…

Marianne Beaufort despises Rafe Montague and is marrying him purely out of duty to her family.  But when she meets the mysterious Drew who claims to be from the future she knows that at last she has found a man that she can love. But how can she betray her duty and let down her family who are counting on her to marry Rafe.  Especially when the man she loves claims to be from the future and is searching for a way to return.

In a wonderful setting and rich in history Christine Holden once again brings the past to life in a touching time travel romance novel which in many ways is unique to the genre.  In Drew’s own words time travel novels do not usually have people going back in time when they have dependents in their own time relying on them.

Ms Holden shows us a caring father’s story as he struggles to make the ultimate sacrifice for the love of his daughter.  But as with most romance novels a happy ending us just around the corner.  A Hitch in Time takes us on a wonderful journey to get to that destination.
