Heart of the Hero

Heart of the Hero by Rickey R Mallory is set in the not too distant future.  It is the story of a man who has returned from a horrific accident on a space station without any memory at all.

Danny White is a hero.  His actions on board the space station had saved the lives of many.  However the accident was not without losses and there were lives lost and Danny has suffered terrible injuries.

Returning to his wife and mother he is without any memory at all.  His face has been rebuilt, he has no finger prints and his DNA has been messed up.  In short he believes that he could be another person and not Daniel White, heir and playboy.

Kee has been waiting for Danny to return after a five year absence. However she is not exactly happy to see him.  Although he does not recall her at all she remembers with ease their last meeting when he told her that he wanted to return to a divorce.  Kee has not divorced him and now he has returned to her.

Danny confides in Kee who agrees to help him get his memory back.  But she dreads the day that it does.

Danny soon finds that Kee is scared of him and wonders at what had happened between the husband and wife to cause such fear.  The more he delves into the past the more he begins to realise that he does not want to be the Daniel White who had caused such pain.

But if he is not Daniel, then who is he?  The answers may be on the disks that he carries of himself and his lost bunkmate.  Sam White was also on the space station and his body was never recovered.  Daniel starts to suspect that maybe the reason he can't remember being Daniel is because he never was.

The answers however continue to elude him and he struggles to find his place in the society he left behind five years before.

This is sci-fi romance at its most touching.  The shattered relationship between Danny and Kee is what this story is all about.  If you are looking for hardcore sci-fi then this is not the book for you.  But if you are looking for a gentle romance novel set in a time not that different from our own then you should like this book.
