Set in the year 1818 My Fallen Angel by Pamela Britton is a historical
romance with a difference, for the hero of this tale is an angel sent back
to earth to earn his chance
at entering heaven.
Garrick Asquith-Wolf is a man who battles pirates on the high seas. At least he is until the day he vanquishes one and declares himself invincible. A stray bolt of lightening proves that he is not and he is returned to earth as an angel with the task of helping Lucy Hartford prove that the young urchin boy in her care is in fact the son of a nobleman.
Human in all ways Garrick is gifted with no heavenly powers and arrives back on earth with only a set of rules that he must abide by if he is to enter heaven. He has a little less than a month to complete his task and every time he breaks a rule he loses a little more time. And when the rules he has to obey include no kissing Lucy or touching her he finds that his task is even more difficult than he anticipated, for the more time he spends with her the more he wants her.
Lucy does not know exactly why Garrick is helping her to uncover the truth about Tom’s parentage but she needs all the help she can get. Falling out of a tree onto the top of her guardian angel is not the best way she could have thought of of introducing herself to one of the most famous men in England. However clumsy she is Lucy is determined not to be left behind and she and Garrick are soon on the adventure of their lives as they race against time to uncover the truth before those who would see the secret laid to rest forever succeed in their dark task.
The puzzle takes them first to London and then to Spain. Unfortunately for Lucy her clumsiness leads them to setting sail with only half the crew on the ship and no chaperone in sight. However she does have the company of her friend Beth who did not manage to disembark in time.
Their reputations are about to be ruined and it does not take Lucy long to figure out that a way out of their predicament is for Garrick to marry her. Now if only she could convince him that her idea is the best solution for all.
With the help of Beth she sets out to seduce Garrick while they are far at sea and there is no escape for him. Lucy has no idea of Garrick’s heavenly task and the true reason why he is keeping his distance from her.
Garrick meanwhile has other problems besides his growing attraction for Lucy. He knows he cannot have her but there are beings out there willing to make a trade that will give him a few days with Lucy. Resisting the devil’s bargain Garrick struggles to keep his distance from Lucy until events happen that force him to make a choice between his love for her and his own soul.
With a good mystery and plenty of adventure this is a paranormal romance that gives plenty of hints that there might be a sequel. I just wished that Garrick could have had a few heavenly powers on his return to earth.
When reading this novel it comes as no surprise to find that it earned Ms Britton a nomination for a “GOLDEN HEART”. My Fallen Angel is a wonderful debut novel with an ending that in my opinion likens angels and devils to lawyers, though which is the closest match is a matter of opinion. This is an author to watch out for.
