Enchanted Time

Enchanted Time by Any Elizabeth Saunders Enchanted Time by Amy Elizabeth Saunders is part of the Timeswept series and is quite hard to find.  However you may find that it is worth searching in used book stores to add this one to your collection.

Ivy Raymond is delighted when a customer to her shop Enchanted Time offers to sell her an ancient book of spells.  At first Ivy declines the offer, for she can not afford to give the woman the true value of the precious volume.  But at the insistence of her customer she does buy the book and is soon testing out some of the verses.

Her first attempt at casting spells results in an abrupt change in the weather - which can easily be put down to coincidence.  But her spell to take her to her true love leaves her stranded in England during the Commonwealth rule of Oliver Cromwell.

Taken in by Julian Ramsden and his family, Ivy finds that she is in the most peculiar predicament and there is no sign of the book that has landed her in this mess.

Julian Ramsden and his family had supported the king during the civil war and as a result their household was now poorly staffed, Julian stripped of his title and wealth and most dangerous of all the witch-hunters were becoming closer and closer to his grandmother and sister.

Julian does everything in his power to protect his family and no sooner has Ivy spotted the books of spells in his grandmother's possession than Julian confiscates it and thus traps Ivy in the past.

Julian will even be blackmailed into marriage with a puritan's daughter to protect his family.  But the longer Ivy remains in his house the more he begins to wonder if there can be a way for him to have her as well.  And I am sure you can  imagine how the suggestion of becoming a mistress goes down with a twentieth century woman.

With magic tricks galore a lot of the humour in this book arises through the hapless spellbinding of Julian's grandmother - Margaret Ramsden.  As well as truth potions and  love potions Margaret and Susanna succeed in filling the castle with rabbits.  The last of which being just the type of thing to draw the attention of the witch-hunters.

This is an enjoyable book but I found that it lacked something in the terms of the reality of the past.  While some time travel novels bring the past to life with a vivid clarity I felt that the past of this novel was lacking in clarity.  The magical elements helped to make up for this lack, but after reading Banishment, which is set in a similar time period I feel that there are few authors who can match Ms Lampitt in bringing this particular century to life.

Still, if you have not read the equally hard to find Banishment you may find that you do not think this novel as lacking as I do.
