Embers of Time by Eugenia Riley is a touching and emotional time travel
novel set in Old Charleston. Cathy Cheney and Nate Bennett are two children who are about to go on
the adventure of a lifetime. Residing in an orphanage whilst their
guardians are doing war work in the Second World War they are the best
of friends and inseparable. They are also witnesses to
a terrible crime and take refuge from the murderous police officer in the
attic of the orphanage. They are still in the attic trapped when
the same officer sets the orphanage on fire in a effort to cover his tracks.
But Cathy and Nate have a friend in the mysterious and ghostly Brown Bessie who opens a doorway through time and when they leap from the attic window they vanish into the past, the only witness to this miracle a local man who cannot believe the sight before his eyes.
Vickie Cheney, an army nurse, and Cathy’s older sister is distraught when she learns of her sister’s death and returns to Charleston in time for the memorial service. It is there that she meets Adrian Bennett who has returned to Charleston from fighting at The Front on learning of the death of his young son.
Both trapped in their own grief and guilt it is a long while before they realise that the other can help with the pain. But they are soon drawn together when they begin to see the ghosts of the two children on the streets of Charleston.
Meeting dead ends at every turn they soon arouse the annoyance of the murdering police officer Lieutenant Keegan who begins to follow the couple as they search for the children.
But the search cannot be completed in 1945 instead they must travel back in time to complete their search. They cannot know that the power that has sent them back in time has also brought Keegan back with them where he continues his pursuit of the Cheneys and Bennetts.
Finding the children at last the story is far from over as they find that there are still problems to be solved, not least of which is the rift between Adrian and his abandoned son.
I will not spoil the final outcome for the rest of the readers but I will just add that the story is far from over and a final twist at the end concludes this wonderfully emotional time travel romance.
If you loved A Tryst in Time you are sure to enjoy this novel just as
much, if not more. Just be sure to have the tissues handy.
A four heart novel that may require just as many packets of tissues before
it is done.
