Descent of Demons

Descent of Demons by Caitlyn McKenna

Descent of Demons by Caitlyn McKenna is the second novel in the Keepers of Eternity series which began with Echoes of Angels.

For those who have not read Echoes of Angels, this review will contain spoilers for that book. Descent of Demons does not stand on its own and it is essential that you read Echoes of Angels first.

Descent of Demons begins where Echoes of Angels left off. However things were not as bad as they appeared at the end of the first book. Or perhaps they were worse. On the one hand Julienne is not dead yet and there is a chance to save her. On the other hand Xavier too survived the climactic events and we see his followings bringing him back to some form of life.

Julienne meanwhile has to fend for herself as she sets out to escape from the dungeons. Julienne’s time is limited however and the demon inside her is slowly killing her.

Morgan, believing that Julienne was dead has left for the Raiders camp and finally realises just how much Julienne meant to him. It is not long before he discovers that Xavier still lives, but rather longer before he finds that Julienne can still be saved.

Luckily they are not apart for long and Morgan returns to his magical heritage in order to save her, but at what price?

Saved by Morgan, Julienne finds that she and the demon within her are now merged into one being and that she is an unprecedented creature, a living vampire. Now she must find a way to live with the thirst for human blood, and quickly before Xavier’s plans come to fruition.

Xavier is still alive and he, Megwyn, and others are playing a dangerous game of politics each trying to play the other and gain the upper hand. Xavier’s way to power, he believes, is through the Scrolls of Cachaen. Believed lost or even a mere myth Xavier has discovered where they now lie and the race is on to find them.

Morgan and Julienne race after Xavier, with the help of a banished Elf and hope they will not be too late to stop him.

Meanwhile the people of Earth are prime pickings for the demons that come through the now open portal.

Another breathtaking climax and another cliffhanger ending bring Descent of Demons to a dramatic conclusion, leaving the way open for volume three.

Unlike the first book this novel is set much more in Sclyd and the complexity of this parallel world is seen in the meticulous attention to detail. More species and characters are introduced and the world of Sclyd begins to take shape.

Sometimes dark and disturbing this is a powerful novel and a worthy successor to Echoes of Angels.
