Damian

"Damian was a touch homophobic.  Boy, had he fallen in with the wrong bunch of vampires."

- Anita Blake, Cerulean Sins

Damian is introduced as a green-eyed, 500 years old vampire with blood red hair, who is not a master.  He is one of Jean-Claude's vampires initially.  He had been rescued from his last master Morvoren / Moroven by Council intervention and Jean-Claude speaking for him.

We later discover that he is in fact over 1000 years old and that Anita had been fooled before.  He had actually been a Viking who had unfortunately raided the wrong castle and been turned into a vampire by Morvoren / Moroven.  She had kept him for centuries as a whipping boy until his rescue.

He works at Danse Macabre and as part of his act he takes an unwilling woman from the audience which draws Anita's attention to him.  Anita naturally takes a stand against this.

He sleeps with a sword in his coffin, which Warrick uses to stab him through the heart.  Jean-Claude and Anita bring him back with Anita's unique ability to call vampires like zombies.

He is one of the most serious of the vampires and he is scared of Anita, perhaps with good reason.

When he heals Nathaniel the wereleopard he begins to rot and is cured by drinking from Anita which binds them even closer.

Anita in fact animates Damian and whatever did before does not.

Damian naturally resents this at first and refers to himself as Anita's pet vampire.  He is bitter that he feels a desire to serve her and ask permission of her for everything he does.  He also cannot refuse a direct order from Anita.  However in time he comes to live with this.

When Anita separates herself from Jean-Claude and Richard she also separates herself from the rest of the wolf and vampire community.  However what she does not realise is that by leaving Damian he cannot function properly without her.

When she finally returns to Jean-Claude she discovers that Damian had gone mad without her and had killed innocent people.  He had been imprisoned for his own good within the Circus of the Damned.  She demands he is released and accepts responsibility for him.

He later becomes a calming influence of Anita and can keep her from losing her temper by his touch alone.

Text in this colour denotes that it is a spoiler for Incubus Dreams

Damian fans will be delighted in his role in Incubus Dreams as he, together with Anita and Nathaniel become a second triumvirate.

Anita realises that as she gains calmness when she touches Damian he gains back some of his passion when they touch.

When the marks are given Anita sees into Damian's past.  She sees his memories of before he became a vampire and of the one who made him and the torture through fear that she used on him.

The marks also have an interesting effect in that Damian is no longer in danger of burning in the sun.  Something that he is unable to appreciate as his being in the light actually sends him into a crazed attack on everyone as he tries to remain in the dark and no one can get through to him to explain that he is safe.  Damian becomes what is known as a day walker.

When Anita becomes weaker it is Damian whose energy she drains before Nathaniel's and her lack of eating and taking care of herself endangers Damian to the extent that he could die.

Damian also finds that he is more beautiful and that it is through Belle Morte's power in Anita.

Damian works at the Danse Macabre and reveals to Anita that he finds it difficult because he has nowhere to take women to.  Damian is living at Anita's house now because as her vampire servant he needs to remain close to her.  Unfortunately things are not particularly homely for him until Anita comes to realise that he too is going to be sticking around and makes arrangements for the basement to be made into a proper home for him until they can build an extension for him to reside in.  Until this point he had merely had a coffin in the basement.

Damian is not his real name.
