Dee Davis

Dee Davis is the author of the newly released Everything in its Time, part of the popular Time Passages series from Jove.  It is a pleasure to welcome this talented new author to the Magical Romance Website to be introduced to us all.

LB     First of all could you please tell us a little about yourself as an introduction to the visitors to the Magical Romance Website.

DD    Let me see...  I was born in a small cabin on the banks of the Rio Grande.  The first thing I remember is the mockingbirds calling from the hackberry trees.

        Ok, just kidding...

During my formative years, I spent half my time dreaming of imaginary worlds and the other half telling my friends the stories  --  which led to a permanent seat next to various elementary school teachers’ desks.  When I discovered that stories could also be committed to paper, it kept me out of a lot of trouble.

Despite life’s ups and downs, basic nature changes very little.  And today, I still spend quite a bit of time talking, and I have missed more than one exit driving while dreaming up stories.  So one day, not too long ago, I decided that talking about writing a book was never going to get the job done.

To date, I’ve finished five manuscripts, won several writing awards, and completely stopped doing laundry.  Right now, the time I don’t spend at the computer, I spend with my husband, my daughter and my cat.  They’re all three really good at listening to stories.

LB    Your first novel, Everything in its Time has just hit the shelves this month.  For those who have not read your novel yet can you please tell us a little about it?

        DD    An earring, a legend, a murder…

Katherine St. Claire has never forgotten the passionate night she shared with a stranger while staying at a castle hotel called Duncreag.  He even haunts her dreams.  Tired of loving "Fantasy Man", as her brother Jeff refers to him, she decides to go back to Duncreag in search, literally, of the man of her dreams.

Iain Mackintosh wears the cairngorm earring of the only woman he will ever love.  Eight long years ago she came to him in the night like a vision.  News of his father's death brings Iain home to Duncreag where he finds himself questioning the circumstances surrounding his father's demise and wishing for the woman his cousin Ranald is convinced is a fairy.

Iain and Katherine arrive at Duncreag each longing to find the other.  There is however a seemingly insurmountable problem.  A five hundred and thirty-year barrier separates them. What follows is the story of a love so powerful it crosses the boundaries of time.  Complicated by murder and abduction in the fifteenth century their love will be tested even after they finally reunite.  Only Jeff's twentieth century discovery of events from the past can save them.

LB    What sort of a reaction have you had from readers so far in response to this Scottish time travel?

DD    The reviews have been wonderful.  And readers have been emailing me with lovely comments.  It is such a fabulous feeling to know that people are reading the book and liking it.  A lady who works with my husband actually sent her copy of the book home with him for me to sign.  She said that she stayed up until five o’clock in the morning to finish it.  What a compliment!

LB    What are you working on at the moment and what can we expect to see on the shelves over the coming months?

DD    At the moment I’m plotting a romantic suspense set in Atlanta.  My next book, After Twilight, will be on bookshelves next January.  It’s a contemporary romantic suspense set on the West Coast of Ireland.

LB    You have written several articles for the Austin Affair, the official newsletter of the Austin Romance Writers Association.  How did you get involved in this and do you have any more articles in the works?

DD    I live in Austin and am a member of the ARWA.  I enjoy writing articles for the newsletter.  I would like to write an article on query letters, but haven’t found the time to sit down and do it!

LB    What type of books do you like to read in your spare time and who are some of your favourite authors?

DD    My favorite books are romantic suspense.  Although I love time travel and the occasional ghost book as well.  My favorite authors include, Mary Stewart, Mary Higgens Clark, Michael Crichton, Robin Cook, Susanna Kearsly, Lynn Hanna, Linda Howard, and on and on…

LB    Your first novel is a time travel.  Do you plan on writing more time travel novels or are you planning on moving into other genres?  If you are planning on moving away from time travels, which genre are you planning on branching out into?

DD    My next two books will be contemporary romantic suspense for Ballantine.  And I’m working on a third right now.  But I do plan to write more time travels.  I have several running around in my head, and two already written.

LB    What do you believe would be your ideal career if you were not writing?

DD    Sing in a rock band -- which isn’t a pretty picture when you think about this forty year old body in spandex!  Seriously, I’d have to find another creative outlet.  It’s a driving force that I don’t think I could ever ignore.

LB    Where do you find inspiration for your novels and how do you go about researching them?

DD    The inspiration comes from every where and no where.  The premise of Everything In Its Time haunted me for years.   After Twilight was inspired by an odd little newspaper article I saw.  Another book was inspired by a little tidbit of history I ran across.  My newest book is just something that jumped into my mind and wouldn’t go away.

I use the library primarily with the web as a secondary resource.  For EIT, I read histories of Scotland, travel books, cookbooks, books on the middle ages, books on architecture -- really anything at all I could get my hands on that could possibly be needed in my story.  I keep research notes, and then use those notes for details I need for a particular scene.  It’s amazing to me how much research you do for something that might only be mentioned in one line or so of the story.

LB    Finally, do you have a message for all your readers out there?

DD    It is absolutely amazing for me to think that people I don’t know are reading something I’ve written and loving it.  It is honestly a dream come true for me!  Thank you!

And I thank you  on behalf of myself and all the visitors to this site for taking the time out to do this interview.
