Chillingham Castle in Northumberland is a place I intended to visit on the same day that I had visited Alnwick Castle a few years ago. Unfortunately it was not possible to fit in both properties on that date due to the amount there was to see at Alnwick. Finally I have now had a chance to visit Chillingham, a castle purported to be the most haunted in Northumberland.

Chillingham Castle is the home of Sir Humphry Wakefield Bt. It is one of the oldest castles that I have visited and unlike some of the others which have been modernised and altered over the years, this is one of those which you can tell as soon as you enter the walls is a building which has been around a long time.
Bleak and murky and hidden from the main road by trees and foliage it is no wonder that it has tales of ghosts aplenty. Be sure to pick up the ghost guide for information on all the spirits within the castle.

At Chillingham Castle you can visit the dungeons and a recreated torture chamber. Though the latter is perhaps not for the eyes of the squeamish or for young children. Although the few that were there on the day I visited were quite happy to go inside and explore the displays of devices.
You can also visit the restored rooms and, like many restoration projects, this is continuing all the time, so that if you visit back again later you may find there is even more to see.

There are also a number of displays of ancient artefacts which have been uncovered at Chillingham.
And when you have seen everything inside there are numerous gardens to wander through. You also get a great view of the gardens from the battlements (as in the photo taken directly above). You can also see the work that has been done to recreate the gardens as they once were.

I get a lot of e-mails from people asking if it is possible to stay in any of the properties I have listed on my site. For the most part the answer is no or, in the case of some of the earlier properties I don't know because I was not taking much notice at the time.
Chillingham however is available for people to stay at within the holiday apartments. Maybe you will be treated to one of the ghostly visits during your stay.
