Please note that all of the pictures on this page are postcard pictures and not personal photos.  The reason for this is that I did not have the opportunity of taking photos at this property due to the weather.

Boscobel House in Shropshire is not a castle, nor is it a palace.  But for all that it is a simply house it once played a famous part in English History.

It is safe to say that it is perhaps not the house which is so famous but rather the tree which is on the property.  Even if you have not heard of Boscobel most people have heard of the Royal Oak.  One of the most common pub names in England the name comes from this quiet country house.

For those who don't know the story the tourguide at the house gives an entertaining recount of the history of the house and the role in played in 1651.  To put it simply this is one of the houses (possibly the most famous one) where King Charles II hid after his escape from the Parliamentarian army after the battle of Worcester.

The hiding places in the house are still accessible and even today people wonder how such a famously tall man managed to hide in such small spaces.  It is debatable whether it was more comfortable hidden beneath the floors or in the famous oak tree.

The tree itself sadly no longer exists.  Tourists visiting the tree and, over the centuries, taking souveniers from it are blamed for the loss of the tree so that today it no longer exists.  However the one above is said to be a descendant from the famous royal oak.

For those who do not care for history or the story of Charles II there is not much to see at Boscobel House. But for those with an interest this property is a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Oh, and check out the scones in the small cafe too - delicious.
