Almost an Angel by Deb Stover is both a ghostly romance and a time
travel romance set in the town of Columbine.
Zach Ryan is a recovering alcoholic who has just inherited the town of Columbine from an eccentric uncle. Moving to the town high in the mountains he is dismayed to find that there is only one inhabitant living in the entire town.
And Hilary Brown must be living, despite her protests for there is no such thing as ghosts...is there?
Hilary Brown lived in Columbine in 1886, where she was hung for murder. She is given until the end of the 20th century to find someone to serve and help so that she can then receive the opportunity to change the circumstances of her death and gain her admittance to heaven. How difficult could that be?
When the people of the town drift away leaving the town to decay, it can be very difficult.
When Zach arrives in town he does not believe her story of angels and missions. Even when he witnesses her disappear before his eyes on numerous occasions, and stand in the path of an oncoming truck without receiving a scratch to her body, he cannot make himself believe her story.
But he cannot stop himself from falling in love with her and only when her mission is complete and she disappears back into the past does he start to believe her absurd tales.
Following Hilary into the past provides all the proof he could need that she was telling the truth but now he finds their roles reversed. Hilary does not remember either him or her transition between life and death in the 20th century, and she is far to sensible to believe in ghosts and time travel.
On his own in a dangerous time Zach finds himself caught up in events seemingly beyond his control and can do little except watch history repeat itself as he tries to convince Hilary of his sanity.
And as Hilary's death approaches he finds himself sacrificing everything in an attempt to save the woman he loves from losing her life again.
Ghostly romance and time travel romance combined into a marvellous novel.
