In York, Pennsylvania 1885 Addie Shaw is a school teacher attempting to teach her class of young students about the Battle of Bosworth.  Thinking it would be a good idea to re-create the battle for the children to take part in she takes them out to a nearby wood and watches them as chaos ensues and the children run riot, fighting each other with a complete disregard for which side they are on.

When she leans against a tree in order to collect her thoughts she is unprepared for the crack that comes from the bark and when she falls backwards she finds herself falling through time to York, England in the year 1485.

Sir Robert Swynton is the one to find Addie and brings her away from the battle she has come upon and to Swynton Manor.

Addie meanwhile is frantic for the safety of both her students and her younger sister who she has cared for since the deaths of their parents.  She knows that no matter what happens she must return to the future and ensure that her students and sister are safe.  Her sister, she knows has a fascination with fire and Addie is scared that she will due harm to herself and others in her meddling with the flames.

Sir Robert however has no intention of letting Addie out of his Manor until he is sure she is not a spy and that she is safe.  But Addie will never be safe while she uses her knowledge from the future to help the people of Swynton Manor and thus arouse their suspicions of her.

To save her from his own people Sir Robert takes Addie as his wife in the belief that this will keep her safe.  Sir Robert's first wife had rejected him continually and at first Sir Robert fears that Addie will do the same.  But even as Addie grows to love her husband she knows that she cannot remain in the past, for not only is the future beckoning her to return but she knows that Sir Robert and his people are going to be on the losing side of the upcoming Battle of Bosworth.

Searching desperately she seeks out the tree that holds the key to her return to the future and taking Sir Robert and his horse with her she finds herself in a future where she is no longer regarded as a respectable member of the community and her sister is missing, presumed dead.

An interesting story in an unusual setting makes this a touching time travel romance.
